Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help Buying: Shoes & Pedals

I want to buy cycling shoes and pedals for my Road Bike. (Giant ORC2)
But I dont have a clue how they work and what's compatable with what?
I like these pedals:

What are the chances of buying some cycling shoes I like that will be compatable with these type of pedals?
Why isn't there an online shop that says "Buy these pedals and these cycling shoes together because they are compatable with eachother"?

Most shoes (except touring/mountain bike) will be compatible with all systems. For those Look 300 Series pedals just look for a shoes with 3 holes like this:

Or these:

Most shoes nowadays work with most pedal systems. The three hole (Look-style) system works with LOOK, new TIME (Impact or RXS) and Shimano SPD-SL. Anyone of those three are cool. If you have MTB roots and would rather do SPD, most shoes are also SPD compatible and there's also all kinds of neat shoes that are just SPD compatible. Nashbar usually has plenty of cool, cheap shoes.

Hi

Since your based in the U.K I'd seriously have a look at this SUPER bargain from GB Cycles.
This is the cheapest I've seen these shoes in the whole world, normally there around GBP 90.00
but at GB there 50% off. Where can you get carbon soles for this price of GBP 45.00 ????
I've even seen Protour cyclists wearing these shoes.

Here is the link

https://www.gbcycles.co.uk/eshop.asp?...R151+ROAD+SHOE

The Shimano R151 are the second to top shoe in their range its exactly the same as the top 215B model
except for the buckle mechanism (215b), I have both pairs and find perfect because to the hollowtech carbon sole and honeycomb inner sole. They will be perfectly compatible with your look pedals as they have the 3 hole mounting which is pretty universal, almost all pedals if not natively compatible with the 3 hole mounting will include adaptor plates to make them compatible.

The main advantage of the this type of shoe is the stiffness a full carbon sole provides to pedaling efficiency, no power is wasted with the flexing of the shoes sole. You'll notice that only the top of the range shoes and most expensive shoes have full carbon soles.

Always be careful with shoe sizing, try on a pair first to get your size in a particular brand before ordering as there is always some differences between brands.

As for pedals the Look PP396 were introduced in 2001, and they are not the current design. You might want to have a look at the Shimano R540 SPD-SL which are cheaper, lighter and are Shimnano's current design (you can see from the photo their a bit more streamlined). Their available at Wiggle as well as GB cycles

Cycling Plus Magazine Review

"While the first SPD road pedal had a platform size which was similar to the Ritchey V4 this one has more in common with the classic Look design and the large platform makes it easier for the feet to 'find' entry without looking down. The cleats are very easy to secure tightly on the shoe using Allen headed screws and the tough, slip-proof material feels safer when walking on hard surfaces then the other hard-shoe systems...adjustments to entry and release tension are made using an Allen key and they are exceptionally smooth and easy to use."

Conclusion: Great value and solid performer

Rating: 9/10

Good luck

Hi

The popularity of SPD style pedals (small cleat) for serious road cycling has waned over the years because many people started to experience hot spots in their feet on long rides, also the foot pedal connection was not as stable. The trend now a days is for larger wide cleats and more stable pedal platforms which assist in greater pedal contact and therefore better pedalling efficiency.

From the looks of the shoes you have selected your probabling looking into doing more serious road riding.
If so I would look at the style of pedal and shoe I've outlined in my previous post in this thread.

However SPD's are great if you intend to do a lot of walking as the cleats can be recessed into the sole of the shoe give a better ground contact. That's why SPDs are popular in mountain biking and commuting.

Hope you find what your looking for.

Awesome!!!
Are you like a Sales Assistant for GB and get commission?
Because you've done really well, I'm almost convinced!
I went in a cycle shop today and asked them about the whole issue and they had no shoes in stock and about 3 different pedals, so I wasn't that impressed.
Shall look at the site in a bit and see what I can do.
Thanks again

If your getting pedals, get them from probikekit. I haven't seen them cheaper any where else and they have free shipping to USA. Seriously I wish I knew about them when I bout pedals, I could have saved 40 bucks on what I paid.

Here are the Shimano pedals

https://https://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=M1032

Shoes are better to buy in person at the LBS so you can try them on. Just make sure whatever you get has the hole pattern for the pedal you choose.

I'm not in any way related to GB other than a SUPER HAPPY customer, I ordered these shoes on the thursday before easter and they arrived on the tuesday after, can't ask for better service especially to Australia from the U.K. They also send you what you order, other places such as Ribble cycles, charge your credit card but don't even send the items, Parker-International send you last years model even though the website shows the 2006 model and you pay for the 2006 version.

Other good U.K mail order stores are

www.totalcycling.com (Stephanie is super helpful and can sometime order stuff in they don't show it on-line).
www.probikekit.com

I'm also trying to save other cyclists some money, especially those starting off, you guys don't need pro gear straight off the bat. Also a lot of stores will try to sell you obsolete stock, or current stuff at super expensive prices. So just trying to help out, having gone through this before.

If you can find the Shimano R151 or an equivalent full carbon shoe cheaper (from a super reputable manufacturer such as shimano) tell me and I'll buy a pair.

I can really vouch for the Shimano stuff becuase I use it myself (I use the Dura-ace SPD-SL pedals and the Shimmano 215b shoes, Dura-ace Groupset) and I can really see their attention to detail in the design of all their products and high quality control.

I think starting out you can't go wrong with this shimano combination, your getting a top of the range shoe for entry level prices and a well designed pedal (Dura-ace model which is exactly the same but lighter was used by Lance Armstrong through most of his career)

Here is a review of the Dura-ace model but the design is the same as the R540 SPD-SL pedals

https://www.cyclingnews.com/tech/?id=...ws/lance_pedal

As posted by "pharmboyrx", the Shimano R540 SPD-SL pedals are only GBP 23.92 from https://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=M1032
So I'd get them from there.

Regards

If this is your budget it is a good starting point. Wellgo makes pretty good stuff for the money. Have had the same pedal for about a year with no problems. Agree with earlier post about trends in pedals. Take a look at Bebop pedals.
