Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shaving cream on chamois?

My brother-in-law told me he was watching one of those Discovery Channel features on Lance and that in the process of getting ready for a ride, he was putting shaving cream in his shorts. They were joking around with Sheryl Crow who laughed and said "that's what he has always used..." My brother-in-law said it looked like plain Gillette Foamy or equivalent. Did anyone else see this or do I need to call BUNK on the family member? I know other threads exist on the subject, but feel free to chime in with any personal favorite product for chamois use...

There is no way I'd be getting shaving cream that close to the nether regions let alone putting it on the chamois before a ride. Yikes...

I don't know that it's bunk, but I'll not be finding out for myself any time soon...

Seriously. If Lance Armstrong rode his bike off a cliff, would you?

I think I saw the same show. I'm pretty sure it was actually Ben Gay.

Not sure about Ben Gay or shaving cream but I did find that GoJo hand cleaner is about the best leather cleaner on earth. The non abrasive kind with Lemon. This sounds crazy but it really works.

Actually, that's probably correct and maybe a good way to soften new chamois.

Years ago when I was involved with baseball, I learned to use shaving cream from an ex-Yankees pitcher to help break in baseball gloves.

But I don't think quality chamois should need shaving cream. Good chamois should be soft and flexible from the first wash onward.

Bunk.

It was from "The Lance Chronicles" last year - Lance was putting Assos Chamois creme on his shorts (you can see the container in the shot) - and the interviewer asked him why he was putting shaving creme on his shorts, and Lance said something like, "It beats having saddle stores - this is the real stuff", but didn't correct him.

The Assos stuff has some menthol on it (as does shaving cremes), so the interviewer may have picked up on the smell. I think Lance didn't correct him because he thought is was a stupid question, but that's just a guess.

Yeah it was chamois cream, Sheryl was saying she had become a master of putting on chamois cream or something like that while she rubbed it on.

The cameraguy probably said "Chamois cream," not "shaving cream."
"Chamois" is pronounced "shammy."

true, there is menthol in it, but the only way you could smell it is if you put your nose right up to the stuff.

'Round these parts, we use Tiger Balm. Really rub it in there. No saddle sores.

I go with atomic balm (the red stuff) and a good punch in the nuts to get me motivated

Nope, he very clearly said "shaving cream", and got a really strange look from Lance.

Way back when I rode with natural chamois, I used Noxema Cream to "grease" it before each ride. I also figured the medication kept me from getting saddle sores. I still use Noxema Cream before long rides on hot days.
