Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Top Speed (newbie)

I have been biking for a couple of weeks now. i went for an easy ten miler yesterday. It just rained and so the roads were wet. When I hit the biggest hill on the route I decided I would try and beat my pitiful record of 32, well I peddled pretty hard and I ended up hitting 36 MPH. I felt like I was on a roller coaster. I live in Indiana so I thought that was a pretty decent top speed. LOL

Congradulations and welcome to the hobby. My top speed on a downhill was during STP when I got trapped in a paceline and had to keep accelerating to avoid getting hit from behind. My cyclometer tracked my top speed at 58 mph. It's times like that you start worrying about catastrophic frame failure.

where in IN are you riding? I'm in Southern Indiana ... Lou metro area.

My indicated stop speed was back in the early to mid 90's on a 2 mile descent in Harrison Co. IN ... I was spinning out in my 53/12 and was hitting 54mph. What a blast of adrenaline ... but ... if anything would've happened, it would not have been pretty! Now, anything in the 40's is MORE than enough for me ... 15yrs later!

My top speed is 44 MPH. there is a long steep hill nearby - but a can't get much faster because the road is twisty and I have to slow down too much around the bends. My ambition is to reach 55 MPH - highway speed for a car.

I think that a flat tire at these speeds would certainly cause a crash.

Does anyone think that a MTB might be safer at high speeds? The lower centre of gravity and wider lower presssure tires would seem to add a degree of stabilty.

I took my mountain bike down a hill that I usually hit mid 30's with my roadbike. I didn't have a computer on the bike at the time so I'm not sure how fast I was going - lines on road going by at the same speed as when on the road bike - but it felt much more stable.

Good job - the hardest part of hitting high speeds is getting comfortable with it. Well, having a good downhill helps. Here in Austin (VERY hilly) I've hit 60+.

OK. next time post a thread when you hit 36 MPH on the flat w/o a big tailwind. it's not that hard if you're in shape and have a good cadence

I was going to say. I haven't been biking long but just got a computer and realized I could go a lot faster than I thought. On a pretty flat area near my house I know I can top 30 mph at about 97 cdc. That is what I did the other day anyway. Now I am wondering how fast I have been going on some pretty steep downhills in a group ride I do. All I know is it was WAY faster.

That said, 30mph on a bike feels super fast.

I am 27, 6'1" 165lbs. I used to run (I competed in college in CC and track) I had to quit running due to knee issues. The biking is helping with that a lot. I didn't think the transition from biking to running would be so hard.

if you're 6'1" and 165 lbs, and ran Xcountry in college - and did well at it - then you'll be flying ONCE you build up a base.

give yourself a couple of months, do some races if you're up for it. if you are then chances are you'll do VERY well.

The fastest speed I've ever obtained was on my mountain bike: 44mph. It felt very stable.

58.6kmh No steep hills where I live, I but I reckon I could do better if I dont get a cross wind. Living close to the beach means there is also a wind.

EDIT: I should state its in kmh

172 mph on my rice rocket (cbr929) and 62mph on a pedal bike. The faster you're going the more stable it is.

I set my normal bike reocrd of 45 MPH coming down Loveland Pass into Breckinridge on a loaded touring bike. Elevation about 10,000 ft., thin air helps reduce drag. Open class unlimited record in a heavy, fully faired recumbent trike coming down the I-70 frontage road into Denver. 70 MPH and the closest to the Pearly Gates I have ever been. The three little bike brakes smoked in seconds and I finally stopped out in the flats south of Golden by pushing against the front wheels with my shoes.

I was racing my riding partner down newport coast yesterday - really long and very fast decent toward the ocean. At the end of our ride, my max speed for the day was 51mph. I was so caught up in smoking him thaat I didn't even notice the speed. My madone was rock stable. The look on his face when I blew by at 50 mph was priceless. I'm 6-2 and 220 lbs. HONK HONK!
