Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lost my left eye on a 22 mile ride.

Hello all! I just got back from a 22 miles ride (on the constitution trail in Bloomington Normal for any of you in Certral Illinois). It was a dang good ride, not too much wind, and got it done in just under 1.5 hours (this is good for me... I have no clue how it ranks with other...). The best part was when a gust of side wind came and even though I was weaing glasses, stole my left contact out of my eye. SO, I had to ride about 18 miles with out a left eye so to speak haha! Has anybody else experienced this?? Does anybody know how to prevent this other than getting RX riding glasses? Thanks all!

Were you wearing shades or any other eye protection?

Yes, I was wearing shades. ALTHOUGH, these shades do not wrap around as much as I would like... so that could be part of the problem.

Could be.

I wear glasses, but the wife wears contacts. I'll have to tell her about this.

I just got these. I find them very comfy with the strap, and they seal my eyes like goggles.

I actually got them with a set of prescription eyecups. But they work well when I wear contacts as well.

Picked em up on ebay for about $40.

Just keep 'em lubed when it gets dry. Helps a lot.

I had the same thing happen to me in mile 10 of a 60 mile journey. I wasn't wearing glasses but I do now, but I still feel like I'm at risk of it happening again. I think keeping them moist is the only way to keep them in.

I had my contact roll behind my eye one time during a winter ride.... talk about a pain in the butt to try to get your contact back in postion when your hands are freezing and you are trying to keep a paceline!

Needless to say I bought better sunglasses that wrap around my face better and always lube my contacts before I hit the road.

Alright... it looks as though a bottle of Visine and better shades are being added to my list of "To buy for the bike" haha! Thanks all! Hope this helps you as well!

When I read the title, I was cringing in expectation of some really gross pics.

Some sunglasses are better than others, in this respect. I used to wear some Coyote sunglasses I purchased at REI and had problems with my left contact blowing out. I switched to Rudy Project Rydons and haven't had a problem since.
