Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What size bike for my 5'3", 13yr old son?

I can get a smokin' deal on a '03 Trek 5200 but it's a size 58cm. I know it's way too big for him now but he'll eventually grow into it. I'm wondering if I put on a 90mm stem and slide the seat all the way forward if it will work. I'm 6'3" and chances are he's going to be growing like a weed in the next few years anyway. Think it will work?

Im 5'3" and I have a 50cm. The saddle is only about 4-5" above the seat post clamp and almost level with the stem and bars. When I plugged my measurements into Competitive Cyclist's calculator it suggested a 47cm to 50cm at the most.

Wow, really? 58cm is going to be way too big then.

Why not have him sit on it? You'll quickly figure out if it could work or not.

Or get a really cheap, used 50ish cm bike. The nice thing about used bikes from 100-250 bucks is that you can turn around and sell 'em for what you paid for 'em next year. In fact, there is a 53 (I think...) cm old school full carbon bike at a shop near me for 250. Lots of people are cleaning out the garage this time of year.

I will eventually, just thinking ahead a bit. I'll probably buy the bike regardless. Can't have too many bikes around.

yea, he's not going to be comfortable at all on that right now.
I'm 5'4 and I go between 49-50 depending.

Here is a bicycle shop in Berkely, CA with a nice selection of used bikes. They ship as well.

At 5'3" I doubt he will fit. Even if you put theseat on the top tube, the bike will handle like a big rig. My brother was on a 52cm frame until he stopped cycling at 5'6". I'm 5'11 and can barely ride a 58 (my 55 is just right for me). Take the above suggestions and shop around for something he fits on. Getting him an awkward feeling bike will save you tons of money because he won't be needing another bike... ever! (re: he won't be riding)

No way he fits 58cm. He maybe able to pedal, but he won't be able to ride it safely. Now do yourself and your son a favor, get him a bike that fits. It's not worth the risk. Ever.

There is no way that he will be able to fit a 58. Period.
