I got bit for the first time (after years of riding) on thursday. He only bit the shoe, but I could feel the teeth through the cover. I pulled out my waterbottle and sprayed him off, but he kept coming anyway. I was seconds away from throwing the bottle at him because I felt so pissed off, but he finally trailed away.
So I'm with you on this.

I hope that real nice dog owner paid your doctor bills and any time you missed from work.

speaking of dogs
I make my usual run out towards the boonies with nothing but trailer parks and they obviously don't believe in leashes or fences. I got chased by a Chiuahua 3 days ago and he gave me the biggest chace yet, kind of funny I do my sprints with dogs until I rounded my last turn to see a 120lb rottweiler staring me down, thank god he wasn't hungry that day. Only been bit on rollerblades when I was 13 though.

on my trail there's a guy who's always out with his big, friendly black lab. When the lab turns around and sees me he'll run back to where i'm at, then keep pace with me until i get to his owner. It's so cute, when he starts to get tired from running and slows down a bit, i say "come on, you can do it," and he speeds back up.
On the other hand, also on the trail a couple of weeks ago, there was a couple out with their horses. I guess the one horse had never seen someone on a bike before; I spooked him pretty good. He reared up, and i slammed on my brakes, waited for the woman to regain control of him. I waited until they rode past, and the horse was hugging the trees on the opposite side of the trail. There's no way i'd even get near him on the bike, since he probably would've kicked me.

My insurance guy tells me the average settlement on a homeowner's policy for a dog bite is around $150K.

Take some HALT! pepper spray with you. I gave a blue healer a snoot full of it the other day and it stopped him in his tracks!

Been chased by a chow mix on an organized ride near the 56 mile mark. I was pooped none the less and here is son of Cujo thirsting for meat. Needless to say, adrenalin kicked in and I sprinted until he wasout of sight. I know my heart rate monitor had to be on the "slow down dumbass; you're going to have a heart attack" scale!

I've been bitten twice. Once by a rotweiler, I should have seen that coming, and once by a poodle. After the first bite I drove the rotweiler off by hitting him with my pump. The poodle I just ended up staring, I was so shocked.
That said, I know any number of very nice dogs who are not driven to bloodlust at the faint sound of a flywheel. Most, though I suspect not all of it, has to do with how the owners treat their animals.

If the owner was real nice about it he would have had the dog on a leash in the first place!
I hope you get a lawyer and sue the crap out of him. I have zero sympathy for dog owners
that take their dog out in public and don't have it under complete control. Believe it or not,
not everyone is a dog lover!

But what about emotional suffering and fear, and that brand new carbon fork I've had my eye on all winter?

We have to understand that dogs are traditionally pack animals and travel as such when they can, even domesticated in any breed. Dogs are mainly drawn to herding and hunting. It comes natural to chase the object which comes near them. If the dog is properly trained and reprimanded by it's owner then the dog will not chase you. A aggressive dog usually has a piece of sh1t for a owner that either abuses the dog or shows it no attention in a positive manner.
Don't get mad at the dog as much as the owner. The owner brunts the responsibility of their dog. I hate being chased as much as anyone but I understand the dog probably has an idiot for an owner!

I yell "no" and if they keep coming after that, full on Halt assault. Last year I nailed a mutt on lap one of a 20 mile loop. Next lap, he was sitting by the house shaking. I know it is not the dogs fault, I love dogs. It's too bad you can't spray the owner...
