Ah ... now I'm beginning to understand. You aren't going out and riding a century in 80+ degrees in jeans or something along those lines.
For what it sounds like you're doing, jeans are probably fine. One caution though, they can be tight across the knees which could develop into patello-femoral pain syndrome if you're doing a lot of riding and/or a lot of climbing in jeans.

Seriously though, if it works for you, then there's no need for the spandex/lycra.

I commute 12km to university everyday on my road bike and just can't be bothered getting changed twice a day so I often wear jeans. I do find them restricting but they are not too bad and as for them getting suck in the chain you can buy ankle clips from your LBS. However when I go for longer rides on the weekend I find riding in bibs (and without a backpack) really liberating.

seriously to the OP, dont let these people talk you into buying lycra if you dont want to, myself and all the people that I know that ride for a living rack up huge miles and dont wear lycra, then again, most of us ride when most "roadies" are inside beotching about the weather too

I preferentially wear jeans/ normal shorts when I don't want to look like an idiot while riding and walking around off the bike. Which is almost always.
Just got my first pair of real cycling shorts and I suppose they're nice for all out max effort training rides, or long fitness rides but I'd never wear them for my normal riding. Different strokes for different folks. I'm also not yet convinced that the padding is any more comfortable than a thin pair of mesh athletic shorts.

Beyond that...the padding isn't just padding. It's also (if not primarily) intended to wick sweat away from the nether regions. That's a health issue, and when properly addressed with proper gear it won't prevent you from riding longer. Regular shorts, 10 miles and I'm pretty unhappy. Even cheap cycling shorts, and I'm not in the least bit uncomfortable at 40.

One plus about riding in jeans though is that you don't have to worry about whether to shave your legs... the friction will wear it right off.

I obviously wear jeans on the bike all the time. Mountain and road. Only for commuting though. All the bottoms are torn and I've got cuts in the right leg on the inseam near the derailleur on all of them. Plus holes in the knees. All my jeans! I'm a girl also. Its just a lack of a paycheck (I just got hired) to buy clothes. Or the fact that all my clothing money goes into cycling gear.
Not to mention, I have a lack of rain water sort of pants and I had to fetch something at the DMV for my parents. They were gone and -expected- me to get it. My grandmother was going to pick me up afterwards. Well, I was in the middle of a rainstorm unfortunately and was forced to ride my bike in a white fleece (waterproof) and ski pants. Well, now every time I'm on a snowboard trip I'm duct taping (same color) my tears I made from the derailleur. Its terrible it came to that. I wasn't thinking about rubber bands for some reason. Plus the fleece had mud stains all over it. Most of it wiped right off but still, quite agonizing.
Don't wear pants without rolling them up, suffing them in your socks, or strapping them down with clips or ties!!! I know this only too well! And its not fun riding in the rain...

I remember riding a road bike really fast into a corner when I was 12 racing my buddy to his house. The bike lost traction due to the speed and extreme cornering angle, plus it was a gas pipe special 10speed racer. The jeans I was wearing saved me from road rash on my hips and legs
The OP may be on to something here, I think I'll start riding in jeans again for you never know

Yeah Im a pant roller up. It makes the point that you rolled the pants up so people dont look at you weird when one pant leg looks funny.
At times I have forgotten the pant leg is rolled up when I got off the bike so Im walking around with a bike helmet and my right leg pant rolled up.
