Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Popping Knee - Problem???

One of my knees fells like it's popping on the upward part of each revolution. It's not audible, but if I place my had on the top portion of my knee, I can feel it. This is not painful, but I just noticed it - I think it's a new thing becuase I would probably have noticed before hundreds of miles this year.

Do you think this might be the early stage of a future problem????

you can try some glucosamine/chondroitin, else check in with your physician.

I've had it happen too...while riding and jogging. It always worked itself out after a minute or two but I don't remember what did the trick. I don't think it's cause for concern...if it hurts or continues, have it checked out.

Funny, this happens to me once in awhile as well. Even just from walking. I guess having two ACL surgeries doesn't help either. Since I don't really feel any pain, I'm not too concern. Might be a good idea to have it checked though, you never know.

I can think of several possible causes and none of them are good. I would get a doctor to check it before you snap a tendon or lock up your knee.

Does this happen every single ride? If you warm up slowly and dress warmly, does it still happen?

Are you clipped in? Your cleats might be slightly off. Or maybe your pedals have too much or too little float?

My issue was more related to my torn ACL and meniscus (recently repaired), but there was a noticeable improvement (before surgery) by making slight adjustments in my cleats until I found the right position. Also, I discovered through various pedal testings that I need close to six degrees of float. More or less was painful. Speedplay cause me the most pain.

So, try making small changes?

Things to check:
- Cleat alignment and position
- Saddle position (vertical and horizontal)
- Pedalling style (are you making complete circles?)
- Doctor

My left knee used to due the exact same thing at the start of everyride. Adjusted the saddle to give a little more leg extension and problem solved. It may mean future problems. Get it checked by a doctor. The cartilage in my knees are already in bad shape. But with a proper setup and not mashing away, I can bike all day without pain.

Yeah, I may not know too much about cycling yet, but this is something I do know about after years of rowing. It could be the early stages of tendonitis or the cartilage in your knee wearing out. I've dealt with both. You can just work through it even if it starts hurting (the pain tends to dull pretty quickly in my experience) but it's probably not a good idea. Glucosamine-Chondroitin does wonders for lubricating joints if it's a cartilage problem, so it's definitely worth a try.
