Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

CAST IS OFF!!! Yahoo!

Man, it feels so good to have this cast off. My hand is all wierd looking though.

Bad thing is, I almost passed out in the doc's office. He had to cut through skin to get all the stitches out and it hurt like crazy. The more he cut through skin the more I got light headed. I had to lay down for a minute. Big baby.

Other bad news is that he wants me to stay off the bike for another 3 weeks. And I'm scheduled to do a big ride in 2. We'll see.

But thanks to all you for the encouragement, kind words, and prayers.

TANX!

My hand still hurts and I still have a tad bit of scaring, but I'm feeling so much better.

I'm going to talk to my doctor about maybe doing this big ride. I may come in last, but what a way to get back on the bike - 300 miles across S.C.

I had a cast on for 7 weeks earlier this year and can definately relate to the 'hand looks wierd' thing. I did an organized ride 3 days after the cast came off and since it was pretty clear to the Dr. that I was going to do it anyway, he gave me a brace/splint to wear when riding so I didn't re-injure anything in the event of a fall.

Its been off since March 1st and I still have problems shifting/braking and with range of motion but I'm not letting that stop me!

A couple of things I learned (although your situation may be different)... icing the sore area after a ride helps and I also found that taking a couple ibuprofens prior to a long ride helps reduce the inflamation.

Good Luck! Let us know how the riding is going!

Thanks. Good advice.

I'll prolly take a bit more time off. My thumb is in real bad shape since I have a screw jammed in it. I can't bend it at all. Pain is slight, but ...

Vicodin makes things happy!
