Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

training tubulars

I've been riding with Tufo tubular clinchers for about a year, and I'm tired of not being able to repair them when the sealant doesn't work. Since I'm used to carrying a spare tire with me all the time anyway, I figure I'll just switch over to tubulars full time.

Does anyone have recommendations for everyday tubular wheels? I'll probably use Vittoria Rally tires (at ~25 each they're cheaper than Tufos and repairable!), but I can't see buying a pair of race-day Zipp 404's for bashing around on my training rides.

I'm running Mavic GP4s and Gel330s with Conti Sprinter tires.
The old box tubular rims are readily available on ebay (or craigslist etc.), I ended up
paying less than $100 to build one set of wheels and the other set (the Gel330s) were also
less than 100 bucks built.
If you want a more current rim I'd go with Reflex rims, 32h 3x on your choice of hub.
Less than a pair of High Zoot wheels and pretty much bullet proof.
The Conti Sprinters I've used were all the file tread variety and I got excellent mileage out of them.
I just bought a pair for my track wheels and they are a different tread, kind of rough but not
the cross hatch I was getting. Can't say how well these new ones will last.
Conti just came out with a Sprinter with Gator Skin tread/technology which I would imagine
would be perfect for commuters, not sure how go fast those would be.

so, long story short
Conti Sprinters on Box tubular rims and your choice of hub, less than $300 for the whole shooting
match (and thats figuring full retail on the tires).

Stay away from cheap tubular tires. They are generally not round enough and resulting in very bumpy ride. Their ride quality is very awful. Conti Sprinter is the way to go and you can get one for $37 each at https://www.biketiresdirect.com/searc...42404&c=722784
Let's hope you don't flat twice or more.
