seat help

New to road biking, and totally in love with it so far. Then only problem is that it kills the crotch everytime I ride:( . Is this gonna take me getting a new seat, or something a little adjusting will do??? Kinda to embrassed to ask my "bike guy" about.

Dude, talk to the "bike guy". Saddle pain is one of the most common problems with cycling as a sport. Nothing to be embarassed about.

You might need a new seat, maybe a pair of bike shorts if you haven't already, maybe some saddle adjustments. Talk to the dude, he'll be able to see your problem and find something that works.

A) Get some decent shorts w/a nice chamois (shorts help a lot (think about chamois creme to reduce chaffing, etc.)).

B) Make sure the saddle is properly adjusted (correct height, fore, aft and angle (this varies for everyone so do a search to see what people recommend, adjust, ride)).

C) Then, and only after trying these things, consider getting a better saddle.

Remember that bike saddles aren't comfortable, only more or less bearable.

I just ordered one of these yesterday after speaking with one of the owners for about 1/2 hour. The design takes the pressure off of the central portion of the pelvis, just behind the scrotum and put its back on the ischial tuberosities where it belongs. I found that after long rides I'd start moving forward on the saddle and putting pressure exactly where it didn't belong.

Maybe you already know this but it can't hurt to bring it up:

One thing you want to double check is that you're sitting on the saddle properly. Try this: (bonus points if you can do it without laughing)

- Sit on your hand and wiggle around until you can feel two roundish bones on your hand. These are your sit-bones.
- Push up on those bones with your hand as much as possible. Remember how this feels. This is the feeling of sitting on your sit-bones.

Make your saddle level with the ground. When sitting on your saddle you should feel the majority of your weight on these bones - not on the tissue between, behind, or in front of them.

In the beginning these bones might feel a little sore but it will go away quickly as you start getting used to it.

Hope that helps.
