Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In a friendly group ride, I agree completely.

When in a more race type ride, where you're sometimes going to be in a paceline at 28-30mph, you need to have your crap together. If you don't, you're a danger to yourself, and more importantly, to others.

If you want to ride with the big boys, you need to put on your big boy shorts and be able to take it.

There's no way to cover everything before a ride. Sometimes on the spot correction needs to be done. I know I've done things that needed correction, I was yelled at, and I learned.

I got yelled at on a fast ride in Naples FL and it was my first time on that ride. I told the guy he should bite me.

I like Florida. The screaming Freds not so much.

Although I must confess, a week there is ok, but I'd blow my brains out after a month.

Personally, I was surprised to learn there was such a thing as a "no-drop" ride. I thought they were all "hang on if you can" rides.

Dear god, some of the no-drop rides I've seen... Rides that are advertised at one pace, where everyone knows what they're getting into, but someone gets dropped on the freaking warmup, but people are too nice to drop them and we end up doing the next 40 miles slow as molasses.

I must admit, this was the type of experience I am afraid of going into cycling. Running is a lot different, but obviously, life and limb aren't in near as much danger as a pace line of 30 mph.

Not to say I'll be in big drop rides anytime soon. I have a friend who does a few weekly drop rides locally, but I plan on just getting experience this summer. Perhaps the summer of 2014 I can join that pace line. I'll be sure to remember and study this thread for rules.

Running shouldn't be to different. You dont run with the under 2hr group if you run a 3hr half marathon right!

Some clubs, mine included run "intro to group riding" nights. The newbs get to participate with the leadership of an experienced rider.

You don't have to start out with the "A" group. Search out mellower group rides. Our club has A,B C and sometimes D rides.

That puts it into perspective a lot better! Thanks pdedes and Homebrew01 as well! I had no intentions of trying to join my friends drop ride any time soon. In fact, I'll probably spend the first few weeks alone or just with another rider.

Much appreciated for the responses!

Homebrew01, are the letters set categories in speed or do they tend to vary by group? Being a competitive NCAA runner, I certainly don't want to be stuck going slow, especially since I'll have fairly limited time in the saddle. On the opposite side, I definitely don't want to be ruining an A group's pace line.

Neither the ISO nor the IEEE have published standards for the pace of group bicycle rides. One group's A pace may be another's B+ pace. One group's A+ pace may roll at 24mph one day, and be an unlimited puller's choice bleed from your eyeballs for the love of god hang on sort of ride the next.

With all due respect, you ain't riding with the big boys.

I've told this story before so I will be brief...and former racing teammate's son fancies himself quite the studly racer (he's very good, doing some national stuff not the local roundy round for an hour type stuff). He's on a ride, breaks off, another break, then he's off by himself. He's hears a noise behind him that sounded like a dump truck coming up. He looks over his shoulder and a guy riding a cross bike, cross tires (thus the sound) a rack on the bike with a pup tent bungied on to the rack crosses over and rides up to mr. testosterone. Then drops him.

The guy is an ex-pro that owns a shop. The kid is a nice kid, he just has no clue, yet.

That's where the big boys live.

At what point did I claim to be one of the big boys? I'm a little fish in a little pond, and I know this.

Point still stands. Even at relatively modest paces, you still need to have your crap together or you're a danger to yourself and others.

I'll let you get back to telling others how small they are. Please, proceed.

So when referencing "the big boys" you really don't know what you are talking about. For a second I thought you had actually done this.

This is exactly why I don't do group rides unless I know the folks I am riding with.
