Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Without fail the same posters who claim this is some massive ego driven reaction eventually go down the violent retaliation path. Projection?

We aren't talking about some 5 minute diatribe or stare down. Dodge every pebble in the road and eventually I'm gonna yell "damn it hold your line". Fine if you want to yell back at least I know you heard me.

Nothing wrong with that as long as you aren't screaming at someone and being a dick about it.

What does "being a dick about it" mean to you? I'm having a hard time figuring out what you think is going here.

It would be nice to know if he's positing a sociopath that would be willing to throw down with an entire group ride because someone yelled "hold your line" or if he thinks "yelling" and "being a dick" means something far more sinister.

And if you're two or three places back, you might have to yell to be heard.

I think you can yell without being a dick about it. The thread isn't called "we're going to scream at you". That would be rude.

Sure, as long as you aren't screaming at someone and having a hissyfit. My comments are directed towards those members who posted that they are dicks.

The ones who care aren't the ones who get all defensive at being told to stop trying to hurt someone.

I've been yelled at for a stupid move, I panicked after losing a bottle after hitting some rumble strips and stopped instead of being not stupid and getting away from the other riders safely. I felt pretty bad about it and made sure to apologize to every jersey I recognized at the next rest stop. I could have seriously hurt someone over a bit of easily replaced plastic, and I deserved it. The whole situation reminded me to stay calm and focused and think. Everyone screws up a little bit here and there, and accidents happen, but sometimes you need to be yelled at to remind you of that.

If you care enough about the other rider's safety you take it the right way, if you don't you puff up your chest and act like someone is questioning your manhood.

This. In its entirety - spoken by someone who has the self-awareness to focus on improvement (there's always room for that).

I always feel terrible if I even tap the brakes in a paceline...fortunately never caused more than a startled 'whoa' from the rider behind...but it reminds you that there's a bike wheel six inches from you and you can't see it or hear it. Having experienced this from both directions, it's startling to say the least, and that's with people you trust. It's no surprise that riders who understand the benefit and pleasure of riding with "good wheels" will steer very clear of anyone without the experience, self-awareness, and skill to participate.

And, I won't yell at you but we'll definitely talk about you later when you aren't around.

I brake often if I get on a wheel that can't hold a constant speed.

I even tell folks who ride my wheel that I'll break to scrub a little speed before I'll swerve to avoid contact.

But.... I ride with people who ride for fun and we won't yell at you.

Oh, and we don't go 30.

I sometimes have to remind myself that it takes 2 to half wheel & yell at myself for getting suckered into it.

So where is the poll tracking the number of people who come into this thread ready to throw down with the "yellers" only to come back six months later to say they finally get it?

Can I yell at people if I'm not in a paceline?

I want to yell, but I almost always am on my own on my commute which is when I get most of my riding done. Would it be acceptable to say, yell at the guy with no tail light at 4:00 AM, in the bike lane of a major street with a 55 MPH speed limit, on a fast descent, who cannot hold his line?

If it is acceptable to yell under these circumstances, can I yell on days that are generally not designated yelling days?

There is no yelling allowed at 4:00 AM, but it is perfectly acceptable to hand him a note in all caps expressing your displeasure.

Understandable, but disappointing. What is cut-off time for the yelling ban in the morning? It might be possible to change my shift to an hour later. If it means that I can add some quality yelling time into my training/commuting program, I will take up the shift change with management.

This only exacerbates the problem.

If you know they're unsteady, there are multiple ways to deal with it.

If you pay attention to what's up the road, and observe their habits, you know when they're going to slow or surge, and you can adjust your speed and position without braking.

You can soft pedal, you can sit up and take more wind, you can leave a little more gap,you can close gaps slowly and smoothly.

All that is dramatically preferable to hitting the brakes.

I yell at myself now when there is nobody else to yell at because according to the OP, you cannot ride safely unless there is a lot of yelling involved
I am constantly catching myself though yelling "on your left" when I mean to yell "on my left"
