this doesn't apply to the OP's 'double echelon audax riding,

but if I've got some jack riding my wheel, I SPECIFICALLY pull them thru the roughest pavement I can roll across.

angry men on bikes, yelling for compliance to rules not necessarily understood by the riders joining up.

it DOES sound pretty egoist.

So next time we'll hand you a note? With a box of candy, and an apology for any offense not intended but taken.

Voodoo, as long as the color of the box matches the color of the note paper, go ahead.

My latest yelling during the ride adventure:

Near the end of a competitive group ride last Saturday my pal Gary dives inside this dude and passes him on the right. A tree branch made him swerve a bit and touch handlebars with the man he passed, at which point he starts hollering 'Uncool! Uncool, UNCOOL!!!!' After the third 'Uncool' we were all rolling our eyes skyward, so I yelled 'Hold your line, you'll live!' Which generally was well received by the peloton, the guy had really over-reacted (no crash or even near-crash at all).

He was very nice about it and came up later and we shook hands and made up. Heat of the moment and all that. I can't blame the guy, but some of us are used to that kind of thing, and some aren't. The first time you get your handlebars scuffed in that situation it can be a bit scary.

Did anyone point out that your friend Gary is an idiot? ;)

*disclaimer* I don't know patentcad nor have I ever ridden with him. :)

Maybe you should have posted to the racing forum. They might get it there. But wait, it is the non racers you are trying to address/educate. I guess you can't win.

delmont425 01-10-07 10:21 PM

I know riders who will actually grab you by the jersey and physically remove you from the line. That's how important it is to us to NOT have to deal with you.

I have no problem with any of this except the "grab you by the jersey" part. Not that I would join your group (I'll bet I could hold my own), but if I did and someone grabbed my jersey...it wouldn't be pretty, let's just leave it at that and remain friends. Other than that...sounds like common sense stuff to me.

Cycling is elitist by nature...deal with it. It's part of what makes it what it is. Everything else in this world has been dumbed down and made politically correct and we're a nation of weaklings and compromisers because of it. Cycling is kind of a last bastion of what is good and right...either accept that or play golf.

i love it when someone is elitist to me when i'm trying to enjoy a new recreational activity. i'd hate it if i were to try something new & someone were to calmly explain to me that i was doing something wrong. please, yell at me when i'm trying to do something new that i enjoy. by all means be a total @$$hole to me so that i will be so upset about it that i will stop doing what i'm doing & have nothing good to say about those involved in the sport. i think i'll play some golf & then love it when someone yells at me to hurry up on my tee time & when they hit their ball at me when i'm not playing up to their speed. there's nothing better than having someone be negative to me while i'm trying to have some fun. awesome. when the guys & i are heading to the course i'll yell out "GET OFF THE ****ING ROAD!!!" in our big pickup truck & then you will start a thread about us & how we are @$$holes & don't understand cycling or the rules of the road. this is totally sweet.

Karma in action. All those rednecks that chuck beerbottles are frustrated ex-cyclists who got yelled at for going over the "bumpiest part of the road" (lol, that one really did make me laugh)

they're mistakes whether you think they are or not, and THEN you get yelled at. if someone continues to make mistakes purposely after being yelled at, well then hopefully they get what they deserve.

rufvelo 01-11-07 11:20 PM

I do remember a certain 'Pro' about 20 yrs ago who would do a lot of yelling to 'educate the newbies' at < 60 miles but for some reason could not stop vomitting after 100 miles or so before he'd bail on us :)

Along with the 10-20 guys behind them. I think thread has soundly demonstrated that your "yelling" is just a sign of people who would rather keep in their own little clique than share the joy of riding with newcomers.

Nevertheless, you still get the "Best Troll of 2007" award. I never really thought that a completely out-of-the-blue post that has no real meaning for anyone who doesn't ride with you (sorry, you're just not that important, especially after your first post) could garner such responses. Ah well.

And yes, you're right, hopefully people will get what they deserve, including those who "are going to yell at you"...
