Cyclist Killed in Wichita

A woman died Saturday from the injuries she suffered when a pickup struck her bicycle while she was riding in east Wichita. The woman's name and age were not released. She and another woman were riding east in the curb lane of Douglas between Armour and Rock Road at about 6:30 a.m. when the eastbound pickup struck them from behind, according to Wichita police. The women were hospitalized in critical condition. One of the women died around 1:40 p.m., according to Wesley Medical Center. The other woman remained in critical condition. The pickup's speed was not known, and police were investigating what caused the accident. The driver did not suffer serious injuries, according to police. Scary stuff considering these are the roads that I ride on. |
see? these are things that i can't tell my mom about, becuase she would simply have a heart attck. but i think the lesson is: KEEP LOOKIN OVER YOUR SHOULDERS.

Always so sad to hear...I'm sold on the use of glasses mirrors. Cannot imagine going on the road without one, I hear a car and look just to see if its ok. Several years ago I was almost rear ended by a car one night while sitting on a motorcycle at a red light. Screaching tires from behind and about 1/2 an inch from impact.That was the longest four seconds of my life. Now with bicycles I always use one.

Update from The Eagle: News about Gabriele Gordon's death led to an impromptu Rosary at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Saturday, where parish members and neighbors met to grieve -- and to pray for Jeanne Gordon, Gabriele's mother. The two women were hit from behind by a pickup at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning as they were riding their bicycles eastbound in the curb lane of Douglas between Armour and Rock Road. Gabriele Gordon, who worked as a nanny, died at about 1:40 p.m. Saturday. She was 27. Jeanne Gordon, 50, remained in critical condition Sunday at Wesley Medical Center. Friends, neighbors and members of the parish in College Hill said the women and their family were pillars of the community and vital to the life of the church. Russ Gordon, Gabriele's father and Jeanne's husband, owns Brick's clothing store in the Bradley Fair shopping center. He and other family members declined to be interviewed on Sunday. The community and church are devastated by the accident, said Crista Burnett, a Blessed Sacrament parishioner and one of Gabriele's former teachers at Kapaun Mount Carmel High School. "I don't know anyone in the parish that won't be affected by her death," she said. "They were so active, so giving of their time." Richard Kirkham, a volunteer sponsor of the parish's Catholic Youth Organization, said Gabriele developed her passion for volunteerism from her mother. "They're both just incredible stewards," he said. "They were just unselfish. Gabe, in the six years I've known her, has never complained, but she gave unconditionally." Kirkham and Gabriele worked together through the youth group for at least five years. Her death came just weeks before the start to the group's softball season, an activity Kirkham said Gabriele always looked forward to. Gabriele is one of six children. Information about funeral arrangements was not available Sunday. Police were still investigating the accident. |
