Road bike for touring?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road bike for touring?

I do multiday tours a couple times a year and 20-30 mile morning rides every week, and I want to buy a bike I can use for both purposes. Number One candidate is an REI Novara Randonnee, a steelframe touring bike which is great for touring and ok for the shorter rides. But what I really want is a road bike that would be just robust enough to use for touring. Does such a thing exist? At under $1000? Any info, many thanks.

Try a Jamis Aurora or Bianchi Volpe

What do you consider "touring"? Do you mean tours where you load up the panniers and are basically self-sufficient for a couple days? Or do you mean tours like "Ride The Rockies" where there are frequent rest stops and trucks to carry your luggage from day to day?

If you mean pannier-based touring (aka, loaded touring), then your options are going way down as most bike frames these days do not come with the necessary eyelets that racks attach to.

If you mean supported tours where the bike is carrying nothing but you, then just about anything will work. Just try to get something with semi-relaxed geometry -- long back-to-back-to-back-etc. days on twitchy bikes can get tiring.

Maybe you can find one for that price. I prefer used Waterfords or Waterford built Paramounts. They are very reasonable on ebay and the used bike market.

You may also want to try the touring board.
