Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

More Newbie Questions . . .

My local cycling club (yes, I am a member ) just sent me an e-mail about some up-coming races. While I'm nowhere near ready for competing, I did have some questions. I've seen all over the place (well, on these forums, and on the racing pages I've visited) references to "CAT" and "CRIT". What do these mean? CAT seems to be some sortof category, but I know not what they equate to . . . and CRIT only makes me think back to my D&D days . . .

I've wondered the same exact thing and have no idea what either means, hopefully someone will clear this up.

Cat means category. Racers are categorized into groups of similar performance - cat 1, cat 2 etc. Crit is short for criterium. It refers to a race that is done in laps around a circuit instead of a road race that is done point to point.

Yep. And Cat 5's are the rookie racers, cat 1's are the gods (and goddesses).

As I understand it, with each race you do, you get points depending on how you placed. Once you accumulate enough points, you can apply for an upgrade to the next "cat" level.

Points are only needed to advance from cat 4 races upwards. Cat 5 you can ride without any points, and after ten races in cat 5, I believe you then can move up to cat 4. To move up beyond that you must earn the point, and I believ you can maintain your cat 4 license as long as you race 5 races a year while in Cat 4, or something along those lines. All the rules are on the USCF's website, and you can get sure details and answers there.
