Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have nightmares about that happening to me (wheel collapsing/fork snapping) during a steep descent every night ... Now I'll have even more vivid images ... Thanks

I saw the same thing happen when I was in college about 22 years ago. I guy on a road bike popped a wheelie and the front wheel kept on rolling. Of course he crashed but not as bad as this guy.

About 30 years ago there used to be this moron who used to ride around the Newport Beach Pier doing a wheelie with no front tire. The last time I saw him he was being attended to by his friends for some pretty bad facial lacerations.

I saw that same thing happen with an F/A-18 Hornet once at El Toro, his front landing gear kept going down the runway when he took off. He didnt go over the handlebars when he belly landed the plane latter on.

The problem may have been more with the bike. I don't think he was doing anything particularly stupid, therefore it's not really genetic selection... just bad luck. Looking at that vid again, it looks like the wheel just pops off... so I guess it's also possible that it's all his fault... again, I'd say bad luck.

Another theory might attribute this to Incompetent Design on the part of the bike manufacturer... but that's another discussion

Most likely he was doing stupid things the bike was not designed to do, has never held a wrench in his hand, and could not see the impending failure due to his gansta baggy pants. I see these morons every day.

you can't be serious. it's a freakin' BMX bike designed specifically for stuff like that. ever consider that the poor kid could have simply forgot to tighten something? no...

BMX bikes are never maintained properly. Most of the spoiled kids that ride them think it is defective if you need to work on it.

I'm not sure spoiled is the adjective I'd use to describe most BMXers around here.

Things happen, now this kid will know to check his axles before he jumps anything. Same thing happened to my friend a few weeks ago, on his X-mart bike. He went off a curb, QR wasn't tight, front wheel came off, and 18 hours later he can finally remember things I said 10 minutes before.

You know, the first thing that came to my mind was that someone was playing a cruel joke. Maybe someone loosened his QR, thinking it would be funny to see it come out from under him. I don't know how probable it is, but it is definitely possible.

BMX's don't use QR's, they have super fat steel threaded axles.

Luckily for the theory, people can ALSO forget to tighten nuts.

Or, more likely in my mind, the kid doesn't have a wrench, and tightens them by hand.
