Reston, VA riders - Please Help
I will be travelling to Reston, VA 6/13-6/16. I would really appreciate it if any of you that may ride in that area can give me some route ideas. I'll be driving up and can bring the bike along to get some training in rather than lose out on an entire week.
Thanks in advance.

If you want some fast uniterrupted riding and be absolutely certain you don't get lost, try the W&OD trail. It's a wide and smooth asphalt path that goes out past Reston, Sterling, Ashburn, Leesburg to Purcerville. Once you get past Sterling, there's not much runner and walking traffic. The part from Leesburg to Purcerville is really scenic and rural. It's roughly 25-28 miles one way from Reston

Excellent! Thanks Stan. My hotel is actually in Sterling, so I'll look up the trail. Sounds like it will be a nice ride.

From Reston, the W&OD is quick and easy. Usually not too crowded on weekday days. Flat with long, straight stretches, expecially the farther west you go.
If you want to add some hills, the country roads around Leesburg and Purcellville and beyond are good.
You can also take the W&OD east and conect with trails that will get you to DC.

Keep on climbing
PPTC (Potomac Pedaler's Touring Club) has a lot of cue sheets on-line as well. Look here:

Loudon County High School is the starting point of some awesome riding. It's not very far from Reston. LCHS is also right on the W&OD trail. It's been a couple years since I lived there, so I don't recall how far a ride it is from Reston to LCHS; 15 miles or so?

yeah, the ride from reston to dc is really nice, albeit a bit crowded. keep it slow on the blind turns. you're gonna want to turn left on the custis trail and that'll take you to several bridges (key bridge for georgetown, roosevelt bridge for foggy bottom, memorial bridge (my favorite) for the mall/monuments/museums. once you're in the city the rock creek bike path is useful, although a bit rough, and if you're there on a weekend, beach drive up in rock creek park is quite nice.
i would be careful of any major roads in the suburbs, there are a lot of teenagers in fast cars who are not used to sharing the road. enjoy your stay.

The W&OD can be used to ride out to Purcellville to the west, as StanSeven posted. You can also take it to the east to get all the way in the Potomac, at which point you can cross the river and take the Capital Crescent trail or go south along the river on the Mt. Vernon trail (which goes, unsurprisingly, to Mt. Vernon). The Capital Crescent trail can be used (take a cue sheet if you do this) to make a loop up through Bethesda and then back down through Rock Creek to the Potomac, more or less right back where you started up it. They're busy on weekends, though much less so outside of densely populated areas like Arlington, Bethesda, and Reston. Great multi-use paths all around.
Have fun!
