How much would a bike like this sell for?

Long story short, some things have taken a turn for the worst and I need to sell my road bike which I recently completed building :(

Please tell me what you think I should set the price at locally and on ebay reserve:

PS: Everything is brand new, never been used. Bike assembled completely as well.

Cannondale CAAD5 Frameset
American Classic 420 Wheelset
Michelin Pro Race 2 Tires
Ultegra 10sp shifters
Ultegra 10sp derailleurs (front and rear)
Ultegra 10sp brakes
FSA SLK K-Force MegaExo Carbon Crank/BB
Ultegra 10sp cassette (12-25)
Ritchey WCS OS stem
Ritchey WCS OS bars
Thomsom Elite Seatpost
Forte SLR Seat (from performancebike)

The bike was expensive to build (full ultegra 10 except an even MORE expensive crankset, AC 420 wheelset, tour-winning frameset) eh....

How much do you think? Around $2,000? Less? More?

Thanks.

way less than 2k, sorry

eskimo85 06-12-06 10:28 AM

$1350, because of the frame

Would I get more if I sold it in pieces?

Problem selling it in pieces is I think you'd get something $750 for the componets and wheels (assuming they're in good condition) But then the frame, being 4 generations old would likely bring very little.

More like $1200 I'd say, if you are lucky. Best bet is probably to ebay, you can usually get more money there.

You can get all those parts built on a lighter frame from BikesDirect brand new for $1300....despite what alanbikehouston says about them.

Yeah, the CAAD5 factor will be a killer. Not a bad frame, just old and not in demand.

I agree that ebay will be the best place to sell the bike, but I would start with a low minimum bid and set a reserve around $1000. Anything beyond that would be a bonus, I think.

This is yet another illustration of the fact that project bikes, while very satisfying to build and ride, are not a great investment or a money-saver. I learned that lesson with a mountain bike that I thought I could build up super-cheap and it came in WAY overbudget. Had a blast building it, though...

I'm riding that mistake now, but I learned...

The question is what are people willing to pay for such a bike. Equipment spec makes little difference to most buyers.

Searching recently closed auctions on eBay for CAAD5, there is a 105 Equipped CAAD5 R800 that sold for under $300. Then there is a 2004 CAAD 5 Frameset only that sold for $370. Craigslist usually fetches even lower prices when compared to eBay.

If maximum return on your dollar is what you desire, you'll have to sell it in parts. Or sell it somewhere like RoadBikeReview classified section.

I'd be surprised if you got more than $1000 for it. Sorry, that is our sport.

I bought my Motobecane SL with very similar componentry brand-spanky-new for $1099.

Well in that case would anybody like to buy the fameset along with a ritchey wcs bar and stem for $350?

Phantoj 06-13-06 08:24 AM

If you really want to sell it, just put it on Ebay for $99, no reserve, and let bidders' collective greed earn you the best possible price -- and be certain to sell it.

Can you send me or post the auction # for that one?
