Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Me 5', 50" George Hincapie 3', 3"

Woke up at 3am yesterday morning. Decided I would be able to get in a bike ride. Since I hate the flats where I live I decided to pack everything up for a hill which is 5.5 hours away. Get there about 11:30 and "attack" the hill. I use the term attack loosely.

My best time is 5 minutes and 50 seconds. I later discovered I had used bike(2) on my computer, which has a smaller tire size programed, but 5' and 50" is what it is.

The hill is marked with George's time of 3 minutes and 3 seconds. When you compare something like that it is amazing how good those guys are. The hill is about 1 mile long, but the measurement is of the steepest 1km at the bottom. There is approximately 350' of elevation gain in the 1km.

I am stilled pretty pleased with my effort. I had to cut the ride short because of thunderstorms. I was able to do the climb with my 34/19, and was going to try the 34/17 next but the storm stopped that. Fatest time came from 34/21.

Just thought I would share.

Richard

Nice. He's discouraging though. We were Junior racers back in NYC back in the 80's. I was 17 and he was still younger. Already been racing for a coupla years. He used to kick my a** as a junior. I turned 18 and I thought, "good riddance, I don't need to race with him anymore, I'll be a Cat 3 and George still a junior". Then he would race some unsanctioned races as a junior with my field. He still kicked ass. He still kicks ass now. He will still kick ass in the future.

You did good time though. I would have died on top of that hill.

1. Wake up at 3am
2. Drive 5.5 hours in the middle of the night to ride
3. Travel almost 6 hours to see how close you can come to riding for 3 minutes.
4. Ride 1km to 350ft elavation
5. Only "pretty pleased with results"

5 reasons you are clearly insane.

Oh, minutes & seconds... I thought you were talking about your height, or maybe your wheelbase! Thought "George can't be that short!"

i actually did more that 1 kilometer. I ended up doing 15 miles before I got rained out. I don't relish driving 5.5 hours to climb hills. If you want to do any hills around here you must drive. Unfortunately for me hill are my favorite. I enjoy the climbing more than the descent. There must be something seriously wrong with me. Oh well.

Interesting. For comparison, my home hill (I call it Mt. Doom) is 450 vertical feet over one mile and my best time on it is 5 mins. 48 secs. I don't know what that would translate to on the 1 km (.62 mile) climb above, but something in the low 4 minute range is a guess. Still a lot slower than Mr. Hincapie : ). Which sort of adds up because the gearing I used to get under 6 mins. on Mt. Doom was 39 x 19 and downshifting to 39 x 21 for the steep grades. That's when I'm hammering that climb. Typically I go up it in a 39 x 21 and click down to the 23 for the steeper parts (a couple of 15%+ sections for 100- 200 yds).
