Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You should consider the traditional, crocheted (?) back road gloves. You won't get the tan line on the back of your hand and they still have the leather palm.

I wear unpadded gloves, and it's 99% of the same "feel" on the bars as gloveless, but with the added protection on my hands in the event I crash.

Tanlines look better than scarred hands. It's easy to grind gravel and all kinds of garbage under your skin where it is difficult/painful to remove and gets infected easily. Besides, having the palms of your hands torn up is really inconvenient.

I really don't like to ride without gloves. I've crashed with and without them, and crashing with them is definitely much better. Besides, they absorb vibration which is good on longer rides or bad roads.

To deal with the tanline issue, maybe you could apply shoe polish.....

During the summer I rarely wear gloves unless I'm racing. And even then sometimes I won't. I guess it's a tri-geek thing.

Hands hurt like heck with glasses and gravel embedded in my palms (after going over the bars on my MTB many years ago), especially when I pour on the disinfectant to clean up the area. Gloves, like helmets, can be helpful in a crash.

You might get a band around the wrist from the strap, that is about it. But to each his/her own.

about 70 % of the time and it also depends on the length of the ride.
after about 40 miles no matter how much I move my hands around they eventually go numb when wearing gloves so I take them off for the remaining miles.

Neither do shorts. I'll stop wearing those from now on.

I always wear gloves. I am actually been wearing the same Fox 3/4 finger MTB gloves for three years. They are still in pretty decent shape. I even wear them on the trainer, I like the grip.

I posted this earlier today on the "gloves no gloves" with the poll:

Always gloves...... I like being able to hold things after a crash........ I used to not wear gloves for training...... I fell once at a low speed due to some wet pine needles....... hand was wrapped for a week. I don't want to know what my hand would have looked like had it been at 30 mph

For me always gloves..... the only down side is the stupid glove tan.

By the way OP, if you need another reasoon to wear gloves take a look at this guys palms......(posted from another glove thread)

EDIT: Removed for graphic purposes and at request of bike froum member... sorry for those offended.... if you wish to view pic.... click here.
https://grahamwatson.com/dublin/misc/image65.html

Also a reason to wear a helmet!

EDIT: Removed for graphic purposes and at request of bike froum memeber.... sorry for those offended.... if you wish to view pic.... click here.

I also remeber reading in another glove thread about how someone's riding partner went to wipe glass off his wheel w/o gloves and cut through his palm to his tendon..... he now has a screwed up hand... if anyone can remeber which thread that was post it. thanks

Fugly is probably the nicest comment I've gotten on my tan lines. It's even worse where my jersey sleeve ends. Even the line where my shorts end is worse.

I look silly at the beach.

That's absurd.
I wear my tan lines with pride, along with my shaved legs. Your vanity is hindering your safety.

I was about to make a comment about my sexy arm tan...but damn, I have been beaten.

I wear gloves 99% of the time, unless the trip is under 5 minutes. If I put on cycling shorts, the gloves come to...
