Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wilmington, NC

Hey all, its been ages since I posted here, and the dust on my bike is a tad thicker than i care to admit. Anywho...I'm heading to Wilmington, NC for a a good six weeks of studying, and cycling. I would apperciate any word on how cycle friendly(or unfriendly) it is out there. Suggestions on some good rides would be cool too.

cheers

I bought some property down there last year and have done some riding there. Lot of traffic, construction and everyone is in a hurry. Getting around by bike isn't that bad once you learn the side streets and back roads.

Two popular rides with locals are:
Greenfield Lake park. It has a bike path and a road that surrounds it ,about 4.5-5 miles around. Close to downtown

The other is to ride River Road from Greenfield Lake Park to Carolina Beach and beyond. I rode this to Fort Fischer and then rode the ferry across to South Port and rode around there a bit. about 46 miles total I had on that ride.

The area west of Wilmington towards Fayetteville looks pretty good for road riding.

Local bike club has the rides I mentioned above on thier website
http://www.capefearcyclists.org/

Word of advice, I am assuming you will be at UNCW but if you are staying in a motel don't stay at any on Market Street just outside of downtown especially the budget type motels( motel 6, econolodge etc). all the drug dealers and criminals hang around that area and the motels are real sheot holes

the carolina beach>ferry>southport and return is a great ride, things to see and do along the way.
fort fisher is all history-ee, watch the sail/kite boarders at the point where U.S.421 ends, ferry fare is cheep for bikes, it's less than 30 min. to southport. In southport are old houses, nice view of the inland waterway and bald head island, lunch at the provision company, etc. When you get back to carolina beach recover w/ some of britt's "hot donuts now" at the boardwalk, if they are still there.

The I-140 bypass is a nice ride, but it is scheduled to open very soon, so hurry up. It is 15 miles one way, and has a few hills (overpasses). If you are here and want more info about that one let me know.

excellent. I'll be there by 7/2 and ready to start riding on 7/3. I'll be staying with some friends just outside wilmington, not sure of the village name. I'll drop a line when i get in.

Thanks guys, excellent info!
