I want to see if my 15 year old son will enjoy riding and perhaps racing, so I am going to rebuild a 1984 Trek 560 that I have. I have removed all of the old components and took it to the sand blaster to remove 2 old crappy paint jobs, I will get it back tomm. and prime the frame and forks. After that I will try to put a half way descent paint job and clearcoat on it.

I have all sorts of mismatched parts laying around that I will try to use to keep the cost down.

Things I will have to find or replace for sure:

Bottom Bracket 68mm 1.37" x 24TPI
Brake\Shifter 8 spd Levers to replace down tube shifters
Inexpensive wheelset
Seat Post 27.2mm (Maybe)
Quill Stem (Maybe)
Headset 1" Threaded
Rear Derailer 8 spd
Cables

If he rides this when it is done and really wants to get into riding I will then buy him a nice bike.

If it turns out ok I will post some pics.

That sounds very reasonable. I would look over ebay and the local LBS may have some NOS (new old stock) parts you could get on the cheap.

Have fun....I bought a used 1986 Trek 560 a couple of years ago w/Shimano 600. I've had to replace the freewheel, and found good ones on eBay. check out www.vintage-trek.com for the catalogs and the 'correct' parts for that bike. Hope that helps.

Go to any well established shop. They should have lots of old, old used parts just sitting in milk crates like we do. WE usually let go of old parts for 5 bucks a piece.

For other parts, hit ebay for used parts. Well, except the BB. Get a new Shimano Sealed unit, it'll cost you $20. Make sure you measure the spindle length.

I love my 1987 Trek 560. Heavy for some at 23 lbs. but it rides great...and a 210 pounder like me doesn't notice the weight.

Mine came with all 105 and Biopace.

Thanks for the comments. I picked up the frame from the sandblaster at lunch and my son and I will go over it with some 320 grit sand paper before priming it tonight. I am also going after a few items on ebay in hopes of getting them cheap. I'll snap a photo of it before we sand.

Naked frame. Just sandblasted and sanded ready for primer.

You may notice that the top tube cable guides are missing. They had previously been removed because of rust\corrosion. I think I would like to get some of the little plastic ones that were used on Cannondales, does anyone know where to get some? The other option would be some clamp-ons that I have seen, but can only find campy ones on e-bay.

My 1987 Trek 560 was also listed at 23 lbs, but that was with pedals, something bike manufacturers don't do anymore, so take off a pound right there for a comparison with today's claimed weights.

With the right component mix, you're right in there with a good chunk of today's mid-range bikes on weight

The quick turn around part could be a problem. If it were me; I would call all the LBS's and ask about it. They may know someone who does this type of work. BTW, what is the rear spacing on your Trek?

I just won an Alex AT450 wheelset on ebay for 55.00 + 25.00 Shipping (I think they will be good enough for a starter bike).

Now I need to find a set of 8 or 9 speed shift levers (sora or tiagra most likely).

Painted, cable stops, seat, seat post, seat post bolt, forks, old headset, expanded stays to 130mm. Ordered 8spd Sora shifter levers, cassette and chain from Nashbar. Won wheels and vintage shimano top tupe cable clips on ebay. Things are starting to come together, my son is at camp and I may have it done when he gets home in 2 weeks. Attached is the latest pic and also the upgraded Club Fuji that I put together for my daughter.

I got the shimano brake cable clips for the top tube yesterday and expect the wheels, shifters and derauilers to be in tomm. or early next week!

I put the cable clips, brakes and cable housing on last night. When I went home at lunch the shifters chain and cassette were delivered by the mailman. I expect the wheels to be on the porch when I get home according to UPS tracking. I then will only be missing the derauilers, tires, tubes and bottom bracket. I plan on doing some assembly tonight and will post some pics.

damn those old school treks are sweet. buddy of mine just snapped one up in mint condition for $100. nearly tore my hair out when I saw how sweet it was. LOVE those internal cable routings.

Almost done! Put the tires and derauilers on last night after my ride. I just need a bottom bracket and I am going to get it at lunch. Then I will put the cranks and pedals on and tune up the drivetrain.

It looks like it will come in at just under $400. That is more than I anticipated, but the return will be if my son enjoys riding it and we get to ride together. It is also nice to have my first road bike back together.
