How much would you pay for this frame?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How much would you pay for this frame?

I'm wondering how much this Lemond Sarthe frame is really worth?

If I can get it under $400 it seems like it might be a good deal but I just don't know what resale values are on frames to know if that is a good deal or not. I did a completed listing search but there weren't many comparables.

I have most of what I need to build it up with Ultegra 9spd. Any advice would be appreciated.

When you say Old do you mean it isn't a 2005? I thought that paint scheme was from last year so I didn't think it was old at all.

I didnt mean it was old, as in 20+ years old. I meant "any old" as in typical, nothing special.

You make it sound walmart... I'm sure the Lemond Sarthe is a hell of a sweet frame! Personally, I would pay $400 for a Sarthe frame no problem... but that is me and my opinion, I'm not a racer or a veteran cyclist... pretty much a newbie enthusiast, so take it for what it's worth.

The bike, new, runs in the area of $1,200 to $1,500. A frame is 1/2 to 1/3 of the total of a new bike so $600. As soon as it it sold the first time devalue it to $300. In mint condition that is.

I am not saying that its not a nice frame. I have the same type of bike, some foreign made steel frame. So i am not saying its trash, normally when peoepl just buy a frameset they buy something rahter expensive i.e. Look 555 for 2k, Cervelo R3 for 2.5k. I am just saying i wouldnt drop that much money on it. Because you could get new steal or al frame, for 550 to 600.

You can get an AL Ridley for $595, or a steel merkx for $800 from gvhbikes just to give you an idea. And these frames will resell better, because of their name.

I'd pay $0. A 53 is too small for me.

I do like the orange though. A lot. If it were a 57, I might have to bid.

I'd expect it to get close to $400.

The orange Sarthes have a growing cult following, more so than any other color.

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to watch it and see how far it goes. So far, since I found it yesterday it hasn't moved so maybe I can grab it for $300 or less.

$400 is the magic number for this frame because that it what the public will pay for a newer steel Lemond on Ebay - I'll predict $415.

Helmets Save - I wasn't aware that steel Lemonds were made in China - could you substantiate your claim for the benefit of the rest of us?

Sorry, I maybe wrong. If someone that owns a 2005 Lemond Sarthe could verify this for us? I just thought that just like Trek all lower end frames are made in china. Only the Ti and Carbon models were acutally made in the USA. But, I wasnt trying to point out that it was made in china or abroad. I am just trying to say its a nice frame, but there are alternatives that are new and carry a better name.

I am pretty sure frames made in the USA and China will last you just as long. There are lifetime warrenties on lemond frames, so when they outsource them to china or where ever, they probably picked a manufacturer that met their quality standards. So dont go around thinking that its cheap and will fail sooner...

Thanks for all of the speculation.

You should try Auction Sniper! Just tell them your maximum bid (the most you would pay for it) and set the lead time, so when you are at work or out, it will bid for you in the last few seconds of the auction. Set the lead time close enough that other watchers don't have enough time to increase there bids and outbid you... Bidding early just drives up the price! I haven't lost an auction since, except for one time where bidding got over my max bid and I wasn't around to recieve Auction sniper's alerts that the current bidding was higher than my max bid.... at that point, I wouldn't have bid anyway. Awesome tool for getting what you want at the lowest possible price!!!

Of course, without the shill kozoson (two retracted bids? C'mon!), it's only worth $330.99
