did a solo metric today

I'm still not sure how on earth I'm going to ride STP in one day, but I feel like things are coming along. 72 miles (115.87 kilometers) in 4 hours, 20 minutes. Average speed 17.6 mph (it was as high as 17.8 until I hit the city coming home). There were surpirsingly few cyclists out today considering how beautiful it was out.

I rode out to West Seattle (Alki), down past Lincoln Park, through South Park and Georgetown, up the filling-rattling Airport way, across the I-90 bridge for two laps of the 14 mile Mercer Island loop, then home. I topped out at 43 mph on a descent that almost took me onto the highway :o

I still need to work on the eating and riding thing. I felt great until I got off the bike. Then I felt really funky for a while. I wish I could have had about another hour of riding time, but when your significant other offers you brunch at the 5 Spot, you don't argue.

If you can ride those sorts of speeds for that distance, it sounds to me like your strong enough to do STP in one day.

You will have to work on the nutrition. Most people do well with some sort of hydration drink along with something else. You should also consider a hydration drink - that made a noticeable difference for me.

I did flying wheels today in a group. 5:43 for 96.5 miles with about 3300 of vertical.

I used to work in Belltown, so I understand the allure of the 5 spot...
