Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Finally scheduled a pro fit - questions

After struggling with my fit for a while and trying to make corrections myself I've decided to take the plunge and get a comprehensive pro fitting.

I'm going to take with me all of the various extra components I've accumulated (stems, seatposts, saddles, etc.) just in case they want to do a swap out and I happen to already have something that will work. Also my clothing and shoes.

Is there anything else I should make a point to bring, ask about, or take note of before/during the fitting that will be helpful?

Thanks.

Either show up adequately warmed up, or make sure they allow you to do so on the trainer. If the fitter seems competent and you trust them enough, hopefully they can help you fine tune your cleat setup.

most likely they will ask about your goals for bike riding. be honest. if riding centuries is your game, you'll require a different set up then a cat 3 racer. also, if you've been riding a lot this summer, you may be able to tolerate a more agressive fit but when winter roles around and you're cold and stiff you may need something more relaxed.

Well they told me they have two versions...the basic full body fit is $150, and it includes basically everything including cleat adjustments. Then they have something called the 3-D fit that I think they use computers and everything on. It's $250. I opted for the basic one.

+1 -- get set for the riding you actually do, not what you want them to think you do. Also, don't be afraid to tweak their adjustments after you get home. Very fine adjustments can make a big difference and you will discover things on the road that couldn't be tested in the shop.

just thought of something else:

my fitter gave me a diagram and all my ideal measurements listed on it. this was very useful when i purchased a new bike...i just measured and set everything the same as it was on the old bike. saved a lot of time fussing around with stuff. try to get your measurements written down if possible.

timmhaan, where did you have yours done? If I'm being fit to my own bike rather than getting a size-cycle fit for a new bike, will they still do all the measurements and such, or will they just eyeball me on my bike?

i went to paul levine at asphaltgreen. he's a serotta fitter (but fits any other bike as well). i took my existing bike in and he got me set up on it first and then took measurements of the final fit for me to take home.
