Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

introduction to road -- frame recommendations

Want to swap my steel Surly frame for something more road-race/charity ride friendly. I have Shimano 105 level components on the Surly now. It is not set up ss or fixed gear (I have a lemond fillmore for that) Looking for decent frameset recommendations. Brand doesn't matter to me personally. I'm only just begining so I'm not looking for carbon fiber or anything really expensive. Any ideas?

Is it a Pacer? If so, what's the problem with it? Weight/Fit?

No, it's a crosscheck. Weight is my primary concern. Also, geometry.

Lugged steel for the win. Select from non compact geometries of Bianchi, Cinelli, Rossin, Botecchia...

I always thought that the Crosscheck was Surly's finest offering. The Jack of all trades bike. It ain't light though, as you mentioned.

IMO, steel is the finest frame material made, ever. With that said, good quality steel frames can be a little expensive. Aluminum frames are cheap and there is no excuse to buy one used. You can usually find them for under $200 less fork. Try Leader Bike on ebay. They usually have the frame and fork on sale for a good price. Good luck

I met a guy once who rode cross-country on a cross-check. If you're only just beginning, what's the desire for the light bike? What don't you like about the cross-check, besides its weight apparently? Do you want something that's quicker handling, stiffer...? I've never ridden a cross-check, so I don't know what the characteristics of that bike are.

For steel, check out the Soma Smoothie. I belive it might be incrementally lighter than the crosscheck with a more traditional road geometry. The Tange tubeset supposedly compares favorably to Reynolds 853.

If you're OK with aluminum or alu/carbon there are a bazillion choices. Here's one I find intriguing currently - Blue Competition Cycles:

You can find the RC4-AL for $550 shipped...Google it!
