Short, meduim, long?

If I were to go with a compact crank, would it be best to go with a short, medium or long rear derailleur?

Long will be compatible with everything.

What cassette are you going to use? If you are staying below a 29 as your biggest cog then you could go with a med length rear der. The compact rings don't have an effect one way or the other on the rear derailleur size.
