Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

carbon wrapped seatpost?

what is this all about?

I came across this building up a cannondale, and ive heard from a fellow bike shop employee that the seatpost is aluminum with carbon wrapeed around it. However, he was not sure weather it was just for asthetics on if there are any shock absorbtion qualities behind it. SDo im hoping someone here can fill the rest of us in.

Haha. Sounds posery.
I doubt you'd really notice any difference over a carbon seatpost, or a not-carbon seatpost for that matter.. Manufacturers love to delve into their scientific vocabularies and speak of such wonderful improvements in this or that that you'll find by using certain combinations of material x and material y, but almost all of it is marketing bogus. Save your cash.

I've got an old one -- I don't even know what brand -- and there's no absorption in it, so I say it's just for looks.

The only time I've felt give in a post is on my one and only sloping frame, and that's (obviously) only because the post is sticking out a mile.

Several name brand manufacturers use carbon wrapped aluminum for their posts, I've ridden 4 different ones and there's a substantial difference in weight between them, and in ride quality compared side to side.

Like frames of the "same" material, they aren't all identical, nor is it all marketing. There's actually some good engineering reasons for using this type of construction.

I don't think the carbon wrapped stuff cost much more than the full aluminum stuff, FSA just came out with a line of this, I think it's for the rider who doesn't have all the money to blow on carbon stuff but wants it to look like he did.
