Powertap Noise
 

I seem to have a scraping noise coming from my Powertap.

Any thoughts? Should I be/is there a way to grease it?

...weren't you asking for a wiring diagram to re-solder something on that Powertap not too long ago?? This wouldn't have anything to do with that does it?? ;)

No, of course it doesn't have anything to do with that; what I was soldering was in the computer docking cradle. This is a mechanical noise that seems to be coming from the hub of the bike.

I know...just giving you a hard time....

I don't have much experience with Powertaps, but have you limited the problem to the cassette's freehub or the bearings in the hub...doe sit happen all of the time, only when pedalling, only at regular intervals while pedaling, in the saddle, out of the saddle?

is it the standard/pro or the SL? the standard/pro have a standard ball and cone on the drive side. the cone might be out of adjustment

It's the standard powertap.

At first the problem seemed to be only while pedaling; now it seems to happen at any point. In fact, yesterday I did an experiment - just walking the bike resulted in no noise; but when I put pressure on the saddle (supporting the weight of my body) there was noise.

Its probably one of the bearings.

I would contact Saris customer service. You'll probably need to send it in.

the cones needed to be tightened on my PT standard hub wheel last week. Easy way to check for this is hold the bike (or just the rear wheel) up, take you hand and gently (with two fingers) see if you can get the rim to wobble a bit and possibly touch the brake pads. I just took it into the LBS and they popped off the cassett, tightened the drive side, then put the cassett back on and did the final tightening on the non-drive side so that it rolled perfect but took out the "play" in the hub. This was the first tune up/check the hub has needed since i got the PT wheelset in late march.

The drive side cones suck (they're Shimano 105s...which Saris tech support doesn't seem to know). Because they use cartridge bearings on the non-drive and loose ball on the drive its easier to create play in the loose ball, and then scew up your cone. Check that first. What can also be a problem is that apparently not all of the freehubs were attached perfectly so they can be slightly off angle, which can become a whole can of worms, but thats just pulling and reinstalling the freehub.
My friends and I have started replacing the factory freehubs with Dura-Ace ones, you need to redish the wheel but they do last a lot longer.
