Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First wreck

Been back in the saddle exactly two weeks and approx. 180 miles.

I was in the home stretch of a 40 mile loop that I tried for the first time. There were WAY more hills than I thought there were going to be and by mile 33, I was pretty exhausted. All I remember is that I was, fortunately only doing 12-14 mph when I got into the curb & gutter on the side of the road. I don't recall if I was reaching for water, trying to stretch, or what. Maybe it was just a combination of fatigue and pi$$ poor bike handling skills.

Anyway, I remember realizing that I was going to be toast, but was unable to unclip in time to get a foot down. Next thing I know, I'm lying on my back in the grass on the side of the road. By looking back at my skidmarks (not the ones on in my shorts) I had flown approximately 6 feet, bounced, and gone another 4 or 5 feet. I've got a pretty decent road (sod) rash on my right forearm and elbow. My helmet is not cracked, as best I can tell, but the outer shell has a definate "wrinkle" in it. I guess it's time for a new one.

At this point, I'm just glad that nobody really saw me. There was a girl who had been in the parking lot adjacent to where I lost it, and she came running up, but I told her I was fine.

Bike fared pretty well. Both brifters were toed in slightly, but I was able to push them back into place. I think I knocked my FD slightly out of wack. I was about to take it in this week for adjustment anyway, so I'll have the shop give it a thorough check.

It's really a good thing I was not going faster, or I'd probably have had to call my wife to come get me. As it was, I was able to limp the last 7 miles back home. Now, it's off to the shower to see how bad it hurts to clean the grass and pebbles out of my arm.

"Sod" rash

See the "wrinkle" between the vent holes?

nice road rash... just wait till it pusses over! Next time carry a cell phone with you so you don't have to walk 7 miles in shoes and cleats.

+1 on buying a new helmet.... and you will prolly need new cleats after that walk.

Hope the bike isn't messed up too much.

No, the bike was ridable. I just had some issues with rubbing on the FD when using the middle chainring and small gear. That was OK, since I was pretty much just spinning home at that point.

I don't think there's any major damage. FD MAY be bent, but I don't think so. Gonna have my shop check it out tomorrow or Tuesday.

In addition to the road rash, I've since noticed a nice deep tissue sort of bruise on my right hip. Not bothering me too bad, but I've got a feeling I'll be sleeping on my back or on my left side for a few nights.

Actually, I had the wife take the pic.

The conversation went something like this:

"Honey, I need you to do something for me that you're going to think is kinda' dumb..."

"what?"

"Take a picture of this for me, please."

"Why?"

"So I can post it on the internet for everyone to see what a jacka$$ I am"

When I crashed I had that same type of bruise on my hip, it's painful for a few days, couldn't sleep on it, and it took a really long time to fully heal.
