Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Got passed by a guy on rollerblades!!

Ok, so this feels like a self depricating post, but..

I was out riding earlier this week in a park with 2 lane roads. I was on about mile 6 or 7 riding solo and doing about 19-20 mph. I hear an odd noise behind me and check back to see if a car is closing, shockingly i have a rollerblader closing on me.... He stayed behind me for about 1 mile (seemed to be drafting) then passed me... he was ahead of me for about a mile then I caught up and passed him (not intentially, not totally intentially...)

I admit that this guy looked like he was in much better shape than me, but still I was suprised by his speed.

If you're not quick, trained and fit individuals or teams on blades can and will be faster than you.

Thats pretty suprising he was able to pull away from you while you're doing ~20mph, never knew they could be so fast on the street.
On topic, my dad (not in the best shape of his life) was passed by a jogger on a climb once..., atleast he can laugh about it.

Rollerbladers can get pretty fast. I like blading, its fun. I doubt I can go faster than someone on a bike though. I suppose I need to practice more.

Go home.
Flog yourself.
Spend a couple Gs on upgrades.
Try again.

If you're still slower than the blader, then toss your pump on the ground in front of his wheels.

Last year while riding up a local trail, I saw two teams of 4 each on roller blades, synchronized and literally inches apart in a pace line. They looked to be cruising about 15-18mph but the sight of them in line so close, their chins almost on the backbone of the guy in front of them was a sight to see. Arms and legs totally in sync, otherwise they could never have been so close.

Earlier this year I was riding up a pretty good hill with my wife who is really slow, giving her encouragement and coaching from behind when I hear a noise coming up on us. I turn around and here is a guy on those really long roller blades (cross country simulation) with ski poles coming up behind us. We were doing 5 mph, he was only doing about 6mph or so but he passed us and eventually went out of sight. It didn't do much for my wife's confidence.

I used to blade, before it became "hip".
Racing skates 5 wheels, long frame wheels at least 90mm
can build up a pretty good pace.
I've seen that paceline thing and it is quite impressive.

My old college roommate was a street speedskater and he still races. The boot alone on his skates cost more than my entire bike did. I used to exercise with him, I would bike while he would skate. Those guys were quick.

Filed under "no need to flame if you don't care..."

downhill inliners slide around turns at 45+ on blades. Last weekend, we did a few runs down mount baldy (no brakes, just big slides), then hit GMR. We're much faster than bikes going down steep grades, and a lot faster through turns. Its my "other" passion besides road biking. Its much like downhill skiing with race skis on a super hardpack day.

this is from mammoth. mostly mid 40's, some in the 50mph range.

this is latigo, the lower of the two left hairpins. that's mid 40's, down to 38 in the turn.

Its fun racing cyclist. We usually give at least a one minute lead, then chase them down. Of course, only the ones that want to race us, which is pretty often.
we're out every sunday in the hills of malibu, usually latigo or mulholland above the rock store. If you're out climbing some hills, come check it out. There are less than 100 people worldwide that do this.

Check out the nutbags in europe

centuries are extremly difficult for bladers. I did Athens to Atlanta (www.a2a.net) a few times (87 miles) and was wiped afterwards. The record is 4:19 or something at an average of 20.17 mph. That's one fit mo fo. Most top speedskaters spend 1/2 their time on bikes. Skating is too hard on your legs to work the cardio properly.

Man any one who can do even 50 miles on blades could prob do a century on a bike with out breakign a sweat. Ive never tried it my self to much like walking. I got bad knees and side to side motion realy messes with me. So theres no way i could ever use roller blades. Ill tell you though any one who can keep up with me at 30 mph on skates of any sort has my respect big time.

I do wish i could blade though it looks like loads of fun. Me personaly i miss being able to ride 10 miles then hike for another 10. I suppose if i took it realy easy i stil could. One of these days maybe ill get me a good set of hikign boots and toss em in paniers and hit the trail. Just got to find me a good smart dog heheh. I use to go for a 2 mile ride with my dog following along behind me leash him up and hit the trails up at silver creek and do probably 10 miles up there hiking with him mostly off the maintained trails. I know every side trail unmarked pond and every old truck buss or car back in those woods.

I once showed a new ranger around the park up there who was just learnign the trails and such he damn near got lost lol. Damn listen to me reminising about the old days. Damn roller bladers ...... heheh j/k

Heck back in the day i could have passed some road bikes on my mtb. Corse it had road bike gearing on it and came in under 24 pounds. I set my all time speed record on that dang bike 49.6 mph wich i think was my comps max possible was a 9.99 dolar cheapy.

I've been at the end a bonk ride, barely able to turn the pedals, and been passed by _runners_.

Oh wow. I never knew blades could be so fast. The thought of going much faster on a descent scares me.

worst cramping I ever had was after blading for about 25 miles,
every muscle group in my legs were cramping, I thought I was gonna die and
hoped I would.

He must have had speed skates (5wheels) to do that, but I play Inline hockey and I can get up to a good speed in a hurry, but with out speed skates it is hard to hold that speed for a long time, especialy on a rough outside surface.
