I believe that they are as good as anything in their price range. The problem is that they are frequently seen machine built into low price-point light weight wheels. My experience has been that if you take such a wheel and stress relieve and retrue/tension, then it lasts as well as anything at that $$. If you don't, they fail and you blame the rim quality. I have seen no inherent quality problems with the few Alex rims that I have had (and still have) and I'm no lightweight.

Alex rims are just about all that I ride. I've had a few problems with them, but for what they cost they're fine.

I have ALX260's with now over 6000 miles and 7 flats to the rear wheel. It still runs as true as the first day I rode them.

It's all relative... like any wheel it's going to depend on what type of Alex rim you run relative to your weight and riding style.
What I can say is that I run Alex AT450s on my commuter fixed gear. When you're sandwiched between a parade of cars, there are times when it's impossible to maneuver around some nasty, monsterous expansion joints and potholes in here in san francisco, where we likely have some of the worst city roads in the country.
I made sure the spokes were tensioned properly and have had no problems. These aren't the stiffest wheels around by far, but as a cheap, no nonsense utility wheelset they've been great - I haven't had to true them yet over several hundred miles of commuting. They're wearing 23mm Vred Fortezzas.

I think you need to actually get out and ride your bike a bit and stop worrying so much about gear. You can buy the coolest bike in the world, but if you only spend your time obsessing over gear and posting on the 'net you'll still get dropped like a wet kleenex.

i have some cheap alex wheels and like mentioned, have em retensioned and trued and they've honestly given me zero problems. i use em on my cross bike and have beat the **** out of em for two years and they still roll fine. built around a decent hub i don't think there's much to worry about.
having said that, velocity aeroheads are reasonably priced. i have em on my fixie and i really like these rims. plus velocity has excellent customer service. for a budget set of training wheels i'd go that direction.

I've got them on both my bikes (one steel, one alum.) I'm 6ft 170pds & the only time I've had a problem with them is when I got bumped by an SUV and had the rear wheel knocked slightly out of true.
