Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

40-28 or ??? Compact Available

A 52/34 or such "compact" crank does me no good. I suspect it does 90% of the cycling world no good. Now, if there was a REAL compact crank available like a ....well maybe 40/28 I'd buy it. That would truly be compact and serve the needs of a lot more cyclists than the normal compact. Heck, I very rarely use my 52 on my triple anymore. I use the 42 almost exclusively and just go into the 30 on steeper (7%+) climbs.

So...anybody know where I could get a 40-28 or something like that?

Just buy individual chain rings and make it custom. Thats what I did. I have a 48/36 on my bike right now. I have an FSA carbon crank that was 50/34 and just changed the rings. They are cheap.

Get an old mtb crank and set the two inner rings as 40/28......or perhaps your current crank arm can accomodate these sizes......just the way you want it....
