Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SoCal Cyclists...

How do you keep the sun from frying the skin right off your face?

it has been non-stop 90+ degree, no clouds weather for the past month. i just got a new bike and it is killing me not to take it out first thing in the morning. but even with sunscreen, shades, and a hat, i still come back with my cheeks cooking like a pot-roast.

any advice? only ride at night?

Just came back from a night ride and it is still 84 at 11pm...

I use a product called aloe gator, it is a gel and spf40.. It works extremely well when you sweat.. A lot of sunblocks say they are sweatproof but I have found that not to be the case all the time.. Here is a link, they are available at rei.. they also sell a smaller verison 1 ounce that you can carry with you.. I think it is 3.99..

My alarm clock helps. I set it for 4:00 a.m. and I'm out riding by 5:15-5:30 at the latest. I melt in the heat (it's not pretty ) so this is the only way that I can ride comfortably in this weather. On shorter ride days I'm back home usually by 8:00 a.m. and on long ride days, done by 11:00ish.

Like they said ride early. I usually set my alarm for 5:30, turn it off, get out of bed at 6:30. I'm on the road at 7 complaining the whole time about the heat.

I hardly ever burn regardless of when I ride. My dad is totally opposite though. He uses Neutrogena's sport sunscreen. It's about $10 a bottle. I've been getting up around 6am and riding till about 8:30 or 9am. The last couple of mornings it's been almost 80* at 6am with 50%+ humidity.

Coppertone Sport sun screen. Although I've been riding early to get done in this heat. It was 84 degrees at 8:30 this morning. Went though 2 water bottles in just 20 miles!

I rode 34 miles yesterday and it must have been over 95 when we finished.

Where did you start from socalrider? We did the whole SART on Thursday morning, it was my first time taking it past 1st St. in Santa Ana. I normally just ride it from near my house to the beach trail, only about 2.5 miles. I liked it, there were some sketchy areas but I didn't feel uncomfortable since I was riding with friends.

Sheldon, I have been going through so much water on my rides. I just can't seem to get enough in this heat. I'm hoping that it decides to cool down a bit!

Just back from beach ride, left from my house in Claremont.. 85 miles.. 15.9 avg speed.. Not too bad, the heat/humidity wasn't as bad as yesterday.. Had to stop and fill the bottles twice.. Newport was very nice this morning, overcast, nice cool breeze..

90 would be nice, it's been 100s in the valley. Most importantly, I put on sweatproof sunscreen (30 spf) before EVERY ride. If I forget, I get a slight burn without a doubt. It also helps that I have built up a tan that helps build up protection a bit, but I store that sun block in my helmet so I don't forget!

I also started making my rides earlier. I leave around 7 for a 2-3 hour ride now. I used to think I'm going to need a light to ride in the Winter when it gets dark earlier, but I think I could use that now to do night rides when it's cooler.

Are you re-applying sunscreen after you sweat it off? On long rides I carry a little tube or stick like this - https://www.coppertone.com/detail_sp_30stick.aspx - because it does wear off after a few hours. Also make sure that your sunscreen is fairly new. I remember hearing this from a safety consultant so I did a search on it today and found several sites that agree that it loses strength over time.

You know...I was taking the trash out last night (or this morning rather) around that time and I was thinking that it would be nice to go for a ride. I went to bed instead.

Get a visor with wide & long brim. When you look like a platypus, your face will be well protected.

About the same temp in LA but 74 humidity. I grew up in humidity so I am fairly used to it. I just checked online where I grew up, they are at 94 percent humidity right now.

Non-oily sunscreen spray. I'm riding in long beack, lakewood, seal beach area and its been nasty.

thanks for all the advice. i rode the river from LA to Long Beach yesterday and although i could not manage to get out of bed early enough to beat the heat, i applied and re-applied liberal doses of SPF40 cream, which seemed to do the trick (although i do have a slight tanline around my eyes where my sunglasses were.)

Sadly, I haven't ridden much in the heat. I rode to work and back (34 miles round trip) twice last week and I did Midnight Ridazz on Friday night. All fixie rides, though... I can't remember the last time I was on my geared road bike.

I'm going to have to change that, methinks.

You can make good on that ride you organized a couple of months back by joining us on the Irvine/Oceanside ride this Sat. There will be a couple of fixed geared riders....

OK so I know this is sort of ****er, but I always wear a mountain bike helmet, even on the road - the visor does provide some protection. Alot of my friends will also wear a cap or visor to keep the sun directly off your face and then a good sunscreen made for sports activities. Better yet ride early morning or my favorite, late afternoon.

You can also plan your route so that the sun is primarily on your back as well, then only turn to face it on your way back when it's low on the horizon and not as strong.
