Steep?

I'll be hitting this like Ike tonight.

It keeps going afterwards but only at a mere 20something%....

Correction: 27% :D :D

For those that doubt me, it is an actual road:

CastIron 07-18-06 02:47 PM

Meh, it's 1/4 mile long. The Thighs of Cypress shouldn't be impressed by that.

Cypress 07-18-06 02:49 PM

They'll be impressed when I ride up it doing a nose wheelie...

CastIron 07-18-06 02:52 PM

So you're filming a Jackass episode?

platypus 07-18-06 03:03 PM

just do consecutive tailwhips all the way up the hill.

Now that'd be impressive. :D

jschen 07-18-06 03:22 PM

55% grade? I somehow doubt the accuracy of that value. The M1 Abrams tank is spec'd to climb a 60% grade. What's the point of a normal road that requires capabilities near that of a top of the line tank to climb? Can a typical car safely navigate a 55% grade? (Even in the rain?) What if some idiot tries a U turn? (The aforementioned tank is spec'd to handle a 40% side grade. Even it can't safely make a U turn.)

WWTMD?

(What Would Terry Morse Do?)

Cypress 07-18-06 03:26 PM

Call toporoute.com and tell them their software is broken.

Their software probably is fine. Calculating grade isn't exactly difficult. The dataset they have probably is a bit off in that area. Either incorrect elevation (is there a bridge by any chance?) or a slight misplacement of the road causing it to appear to go up some embankment near the road.

Cypress 07-18-06 03:36 PM

I rode past this road on Sunday, and it looked like fun. No bridges that I could see. If it turns out that this is the steepest road in MT, I'll grab my camera and hit it again sometime. I'd bring it today, but it's a digital SLR. Not exactly easy to carry in a jersey pocket.

Hipcycler 07-18-06 03:42 PM

Oh come on Cypress.....take the camera for cryin' out loud. Just take an extra injection in the thighs and get on with it.....crush that little hills soul and take pictures for us along the way.

It ain't nothing but trash without the pix ma man.

I can't even believe I am reading something the great and powerful Cypress wrote....a camera being too tough to carry?

No, that's not the Cypress I know.

big john 07-18-06 03:42 PM

Supergreg could handle it.

ravenmore 07-18-06 03:48 PM

Isn't the steepest road in the world something like a 27% grade - in New Zealand I think.... Or was it 37%....oh hell I went and confused myself again. Be back in a few..... ;)

Bladwin St. New Zealand - 38% http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldwin_Street,_Dunedin

Have to ask are you coming back down the same road?

Tell ya what. I'll check it out tonight, and if it happens to be the steepest, I'll ride home and grab my camera, then ride back. Double the miles, and pictures for you. Win/Win.

ravenmore 07-18-06 03:54 PM

Here's a pic from the street I was talking about. Nice, eh? :)

http://www.bikereader.com/BR%20pics/hillpics/RABS2a.jpg

Its a bit steeper - 38%. So 27% should be nothing....

The latter or something like it...............but is that sustained grade or just a grade calculation over a particular poprtion?

Well, I will keep quite about a road I have ridden that has a very steep graded portion. There are unbelievers here!

johnny99 07-18-06 03:55 PM

I doubt that your data is accurate enough to give you a meaningful gradient number over a 0.06 mile distance.

In the rain, no. Typical friction coefficient of wet roads is ~0.5, if memory serves.

Why is it MY data? www.toporoute.com is not MY website. Complain to them.
