Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Which shorts would be the best?

I am looking for a good pair of shorts for the money. Just curious on peoples opinion between the Descente Chevron, Descente Classic Pro and Performance elete and Ultra's. Thanks for the advice.

PS I am a Clydesdale around a 42 waste. My main pair is the Ultra's which are a couple years old.

Thanks again

Steve

Whatever costs the most.

I have only tried the performance shorts. My experience with them is somewhat horrific.
Maybe try velowear? Their elite bibs are some of my favorite.

I picked up some Canari Elite Gel shorts for about $40, and they're great. They say they have a lifetime guarantee as well, although I have not had the chance to prove that yet.

I really like the Performance Elite bibs. They fit my proportions quite well in a medium and they are very comfortable. I have their Century shorts as well and are they quite comfortable also but the Elites are more so. I will be getting the Ultras soon to try them out. And for reference I've had Descentes, Pearls and Hind in the past.

Good fit = good comfort. Buy from a shop where you can try the shorts on and buy whatever fits you best. If you're buying bibs, make sure the that straps fit you properly in addition to the waist, butt, and legs. I like Pearl Izumi bibs, which are widely available in bike shops and are moderately priced.

There are a number of $60-80 bibs that will do just nicely. Yes, bibs. Don't show off your lower back.... Being able to try them on first is a plus.

I wear a Large. I have Performance Ultra and Elite bibs, and a pair of Santini bib knickers; the Santini's are the bomb, but not so much in the warmer weather. I like the Performance Ultras, yet somehow I've collected three pair of their Elites. Must be the price (fwiw, I do have a pair of PI shorts, but skip over them to wear the bibs)

I went to Performance last night for some jerseys and bib shorts (first pair!). I wanted the Ultra, but ended up getting the Elites because they only had Ultra in S and XL They had plenty of the Century bib shorts though, and they did look... interesting. It just seemed to me to be 'too much' padding.
