Do you use an ipod (or other type of headphone) when you ride?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think it's unsafe if you're riding on the road, although those who use them will say otherwise in defense. Bike paths it's ok (in my opinion) as joggers and bladers use them constantly... I've only used them on bike paths with little traffic... Tried using one riding offroad gravel roads and just didn't feel comfortable with it... the path has horses/bikers/joggers/children, etc... didn't seem safe to me.

Well, I don't usually use headphones...but I recently finally got an iPod. I'll try anything once (or twice), so I've tried riding with headphones on the road, and while it does heighten the fun of the ride at times, I can't stop wondering if I'm going to live to see the end of the ride...it just feels unsafe, sorta like riding through major intersections at high speed on the sidewalk. When a car surprises you by blasting past you within inches, you come to the sudden realization of why hearing is a good thing.

On the other hand, headphones are a blast on singletrack...

Edit: I should also add that I've tried it on the road at night and oddly enough I feel safer riding on the road with headphones at night as long as traffic is sparse enough that you can distinguish one set of headlights from another, as cars approach you from behind. I still wouldn't recomend it though.

I ride with music.
If you cut off one of your senses, the others become more active.
I notice that I can smell cars much better.

I tend to end up using the "touch" sense with cars more often (Not really, I haven't been hit)

It's so dangerous that I've been doing it daily since 1989 without incident (small Walkmans prior to iPods). God help me. Hope I survive another day of this madness. The first 100K miles must have simply been lucky.

The noise from the wind in both of my ears is louder than the Led Zeppelin in one ear!

If you really love living and riding in the moment, then the question is ridiculous.

Where I ride there is a split MUP--bike lane to the left and jogging lane to the right. Joggers prefer to do their thing in the bike lane and it seems EVERYONE has the tell-tale white earbuds plugged into the sides of their heads. Jogging in the bike lane? I no longer give the courtesy of shouting "on yer left" since they couldn't hear it anyway, but I like to buzz reaaaaaaaaal close to them. That's whatcha get for jogging in my lane. Long live the scorchers, and yeah, I'm an a$$hole sometimes.

Oh...I wouldn't wear headphones while riding, I need to hear approaching cars and pissed off joggers.

I ride with them on around Hains Point in DC which is a closed loop around the park with minimal traffic. Lots of other cyclists, joggers and rollerbladers to keep cars slow and attentive. Maybe in a steady paceline in open country.

What I'd really like is a single headphone. I'm not keen on cutting off the other earpiece but letting it dangle inside my jersey sucks.

I ride to get away from all the noise that's forced into our lives. Why someone would want to spoil a bike ride by jamming that distraction into their ears is beyond me.

Yup. I use music on my road rides, off road rides, cross training rides, and on my ride to work through SF. When I was a kid in the early 80's I used my walkman to warm up @ the BMX track. I'm a mess.
