Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

hamstring help plz

Hi, my quads are always sore by the end of a hard ride, especially the vastus medialis muscle (inner side above knee). I can't feel any fatigue in my hamstrings even though I am pedalling proper circles. How can I adjust my bike (saddle, cleats, etc) to use my hamstrings more and my quads less? I am riding an 06 Giant TCR Composite 2. Thanks.

Wow, that is a truly remarkable question. There ought to be entire forum devoted to questions like yours.

Typically posterior muscles are used more when the upper-body-angle becomes prone. So lowering your stem, raising your saddle and cocking the front of the saddle upward should present additional stress to your lower back, butt and hamstrings as well. Moving the saddle as far back as possible is effective also.

Good luck, you deserve a special place in the peloton for a question like that. Make sure you make all the adjustments to your bike at once if you really want results.

Ride a steeper seat angle.

Ride out of the saddle on climbs.
