CB Candy Carbon or CB Smarty pedal?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

CB Candy Chrome or CB Smarty pedal?

Hello, I'm looking to get some clipless pedals for my road bike. I've narrowed it down to two pedals

Candy Chrome
or
Smarty Pedals

I've chosen these two cause of the price, and the well rated eggbeater design. However, I don't see a huge difference between these two (unless I'm stupid).

Also, since I'm going to use these for road usage, should I get road shoes or MTB shoes? If I do get road shoes, do I need the Quattro Road Cleats shown here.

It says compatible with eggbeaters and Candy but not Smarty! I use need some shoes that are cheap, look nice and walkable.

Thanks

- Smarty is sealed, no-maintenance...

- Pricepoint's Sette Rival is nice at US$34.99:

The Candy C's can be rebuilt. From what I have read the Smarty's can't be. I have the C's on my road bike and I love them. Just so you know, if you plan on using MTB shoes on your road bike then you have to use the Candies unless you what to modify your MTB shoes. What Crank Brothers' told me was you have to grind the sole down on the inside of the MTB shoe to use them with the Quattro's. I use a very mild MTB shoe with my Candies because I like the idea of being able to walk around.

you can get an ss version of the candy on ebay for what the c's will cost in the store. i'm all for supporting the lbs, but if i'm on a budget i do what i need.
honestly i prefer the eggbeater's. i have both and while the platform on the candies seems like a good idea, it only gives me more area to miss the pedal with the cleat. sometimes i don't quite hit it and bounce around on the platform. never happens with the eggbeaters. this is just my experience of course.
