Bottom bracket and crank compatibility

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bottom bracket and crank compatibility

Hi everyone...just bought a used set of shimano triple ultegra cranks and bottom bracket. It was kinda an impulse buy, so I don't think I did enough homework.

First, the bottom bracket says that it is 73mm and I need a 68mm. The guy said it was standard english threading, so I just thought it would work out. The cup that goes on doesn't even seem like it fits now that I look closely. When I slide it on, it doesn't fit snugly and moves around a bit. How hard/expensive is it to get a new cup? Can the cup be replaced to fit a 68mm shell? Sorry if this is an insanely moronic question, but I'm new to this bike building thing and am still learning.

Second, I didn't think to measure the spindle, but it measures to about 110mm. According to some other things I read, I'll need a 118mm spindle for a triple.

Anyhow, I guess this should show me that I need to know exactly what I need before I just go out making impulse buys. Any help or advise would be appreciated.
