Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

NITE Ride in Indy - Anyone Going?

Anyone doing the NITE ride in Indy this Saturday night. We'll be there on the tandem. Should be a good time. I believe they are almost sold out at 2,500 riders.

What kind of light are you taking? I have a small blinker, some old (bulky) Vetta lights, or a small LED headlight. I don't think a big light is critical, so I was going for the smaller LED. Any ideas?

I had a cheapo cateye light last year and it worked fine.

You don't really need much lighting because the streets are well lit. The guy who rode with me last year had his battery die half way through the ride and he was able to make it to the finish line without incident.

I just got a CygoLite Nite Rover headlight and I really want to use it on the ride. Unfortunatelly, the mounting bracket will not fit on my Lemond OS handlebars so I'm going to ride the Vintage Trek.

It was a Blast! Sorry with the 1000's of people, I guess no good way to make contact without a plan. We arrived around 7 and watched the Velodrome races - very cool. Had great parking and got the bike about 9:45. Ended up in the lower middle of the pack, took about 20 minutes to start. Had a blast with the tandem. Stopped at the rest break and finished in about 2 hours total.

We relaxed, ate, and listed to the live music.

Finally we hit the Velodrome, took the tandem on the track at about 2 am. Scared to death at first, but got the hang of it and with some light traffic hit the top of the bank. Ran about 18 - 20 mph, and had a blast.

Perfect weather, great planning, a super event. Sorry we missed you, but maybe next time.

We are riding the Great Greenway tour in Muncie next week - going?

Drove past the Major Taylor Velodrome last Thursday on my way crossing Indiana 4 times in less than a week (2 E-W, 2 N-S, 1 by bike). Thought about this ride. Good to hear you had fun.

Stay sharp and keep your head down on 65 South of Indy and 69 about 50 miles north of Indy...heard there's a sniper that killed someone.

I did the Great Geenway tour a couple of years ago when I was still living in Ohio. Decent ride. If it was on the other side of the state I'd think about doing it this year.

Have fun....and keep your head down.

John,
Yea, I looked all over for you. Halfway into the ride I spotted a red Trek tandem and ran it down. I was surprised to find out it wasn't you. I asked if they saw another red Trek tandem and they said there was one behind them. I figured you guys would catch up to me because I went with my wife and we were going really slow.

Anyway, it was a great ride and we had allot of fun. I saw a guy that had crashed before me and an ambulance was rolling up. Don't know what happened there, but I also saw two other wrecks. The first one was on the hill towards the end of the ride and a kid ran into an unfortunate rider knocking them both over. The second wreck happened right after the first. These dudes had a bike that holds 10 riders and they got crossed up going up the hill. It was a dark area and a woman plowed right into them. Fortunately she was all right.

I'm going on vacation to Seattle this Friday so I'm going to miss the Great Greenway tour in Muncie. I'd appreciate a post on that ride since I've never done it. Heck, I rode the Cardinal Greenway yesterday. What a nice day for a ride plus I was ready to ride fast after the NITE ride.

I'll have to look on the calender and look for another ride in your area.

Regards,
Bob

Bob,

Yes, that is us, I must not have seen it when I was looking through the pics. Cool picture!

We started with the other red Trek tandem, but we were trying to stay with another couple from Richmond, so our bike twin took off. We passed 2 ambulances, but didn't witness any crashes. I was really surprized how cleared out it was when we made it back. But we basically shut it down riding on the Velodrome until well after 2, and left as the band played the last number of the night.

We have the lap with Lance coming up in August, and there is a local ride in Richmond in September. I think that is about it. Might do the Ghost Ride near Cincy in October, and maybe one day of the Hilly, but that is a looking a little tough right now.

Thanks for the heads up on the pic.

We'll touch base one of these days, I let you know about the Greenway ride.

John
