OK..just rode 20 + miles with a buddy...first ride with the 12-27....wow...wow..wow...maybe my legs were really good tonight, I dunno, but I felt great...the hills didn't bother me at all...just spun right up them...
Thanks for the great advice...

I run a 13-26 with campy... I really don't use the 13 much..and the 26 seems to be just fine for most climbs. ...am doing a century with nearly 10k of elevation gain on a 12-25 this weekend...we'll see how that goes.

I used to have a 13-29 Campy Record on my old Lemond. I think that they still make it.

They do still make it, however I *THINK* you have to run a long cage derailer. Or at least medium.

i too ride where there is alot of hills, some pretty big, theres some flats and some low rollers but for the most part its just small hill, big hill, bigger hill, repeat. would going from a 11-25 to a 12-27 make sense, or would it not be noticable? what disadvantage would i have to switching?
i have a 9spd 105 rear der. btw in case it matters

I like mine as well, I'm planning on going compact as well. I'll need it for Breathless Agony next year
I'm planning on keeping my 11-23 on another wheel for flatter rides.

I switched from an 11-23 to a 12-27: much happiness. I never used the 11 anyway.
I think for most people, the advantage of going 10spd vs 9spd is getting one extra big cog, not the even closer spacing you get by wedging an 18 between 17 and 19. If I was doing dead flat TTs, maybe I'd come to love tight spacing, but I'm not so I don't.

For me, standing up helps to even out working some of my other muscles and gives the ones I use during a sitting-climb a chance to recover. On a long climb, I'll alternate positions. Even the pros do this. Besides, one great tactic is right before you go over the top to attack on the final section of the climb.

I told ya you'd like the 12-27....it works out great, especially with a compact crankset (if you live in a hilly area).

50/36 - 12/26 here and it's been great. Only climbing to the top of a local ski resort did I want lower gearing.

I went from a 12-27 to a 12-25, didn't notice a difference really, I suppose maybe if I could instantly switch between the two, the one difference I noticed is that it shifts a bit easier to the big cogs with the 12-25. (9 sp Ultegra). Although going from a 23 to a 27, that would be noticeable.

12/25: 12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23-25
12/27: 12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-24-27
Unless you ride on the wrong ring or ride up very steep hills, you won't use the biggest two cogs. You won't feel the 1T difference between the 23 and 24 and most of the time you want to use the 27, the hill will be so steep you will barely notice.
