Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

?Best Road shoe?

Hey,

I'm reading all these posts and checking in on a clothing order I placed with probikekit and it occurred to me, maybe I should buy some new shoes, mine are getting kinda warn out and I haven't really treated myself to much lately (the probikekit order is a gift for my g/f). I work hard for my money, so why not.

Anyway, my current road shoe is a specialized BG comp road shoe... but...

These SIDI Ergo 1'scaught my eye; they're not cheap though :-)

On a related note, I often get numb toes on my left foot after 20 or so miles, could it be my shoes?

Anyone have any input on a good road shoe (I'm using shimano ultegra pedals)?

i'm a sidi wearer and fan, but i was drooling today at the lbs over some DMT's. sweet looking (and unbelievably light) shoes. i forget the exact model but they were white and so sweet.
for sidi's i think you get everything you need in the genius. the ergo's just seem like extra bling and and extra c note.

May want to lok at the Specialized Pro Carbon road shoe. I had problems with my feet falling asleep till I tried these. They feel like your favorite slippers even after a full day in the saddle.

I'd have a look at the Shimano 215B, it comes in wider sizes which may help your foot numbness.
Its a full carbon sole and has a honeycomb insole for support. Its also reasonably priced compared to the european brands.

Do shoes really differ in "performance" other than the numbing issues some experience?

I offer the idea that stiffer soles promote better power transfer; for the same reason one would want a stiff set of cranks or a stiff BB shell. Also, soles that are too soft can produce "hotspots" which in my experience, is a whole lot of pain right where the cleat bolts are. I've had this with SPD style cleats in hard plastic soles, but not Look cleats on carbon soles.

Aside from sole stiffness, the more expensive brands seem to offer interesting closure options with cables and rachets and gizmos. I'm a fan of the standard 3 velcro straps, plus they weigh a lot less. Interesting to me is the idea that you can spend $$$$ to lose grams off the bike, but very few seem to care about the weight of their shoes..

Its really the same with most contact points, although I offer that it is probably more likely that we are willing to compromise (i.e. most will not ride clunky boots on a road bike). Most people are not riding full carbon M2 Racer saddles or using no gloves/bartape. A few extra grams for a whole lot of on road adjustability is really probably what the buckles are about.

The best road shoe for you is not going to be the best road shoe for me, with that being said, custom shoes would have to be the best road shoe for you. These shoes are wicked expensive, but I am guesing/hoping that you get what you pay for. D2 Custom Footwear

so, my next question, considering I will try them on in person at my LBS, I still wanna shop around for prices and then see if the LBS can match it (they usually do)... anyone know any killer web sites with great prices for shoes. Something like probikekit but with more shoe selections to choose from?

I like Sidis... I would go with the Genius over the Ergo. I have a pair of their mountain shoes with two of those little monofilament twist rachet thingys... I don't really like the twist ratchets; get the Genius with the velcro. I have "off brand" road shoes; I'm going for some Geniuses when these die.

I like Sidis because they don't fall apart.

They are indeed great shoes. Even my brother -- a life-long Sidi fan and user -- has converted after hearing my yapping about how much I like them.

Fit is more important than pretty much everything else as long as the basic shoe levels are equal.

I went through a couple of shoes before I found the 215 Shimanos. They fit the shape of my foot and the wide was also a big help.

i've had the spec. pro carbon road shoes for about a year and have put around 150-200 miles per week on them since november....i get some numbness after about 2.5-3 hrs on the outsides of my feet. maybe this has to do with the sole or how specialized shoes rotate your foot a bit. in any case, i like how stiff the sole is, but the boot has started to stretch and its making my shoes MUCH less comfy...

no matter what, i think it's already been said that shoes are individual to you and your foot. it's like recommending saddles...
