Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Crank This

Been riding a triple since I started biking, thinking about buying a new bike possibly a Madone 5.2
Anyway cant decide if I should stick with a triple go with a double
Or where Im leaning is a Compact
I am a 2 or 3 times a year citizen racer, maybe a couple of century rides and also 1 trip to Colorado a year where I like to climb a mountain pass, which is about the only time I use my triple.
Looking for any sugestions or feedback on what you have ridden and now ride

Split the difference and get the compact. What's the big deal?

+3 on the compact. Maybe, even consider a 12-27 in the back for Colorado.

Go with the double! The difference is AMAZING! I was riding a 2006 Trek 1500 triple for about three months and it was definately a nice ride but I just upgraded to a 2006 Madone 5.2 with a double and it just blows the gearing system of the 1500 away with a double barrel shotgun blast! KAPLOW! I just feel the power delivery is much smoother and I am totally in love with the big ring now. I didn't really ride in the big ring too much with my 1500 because I felt it wasn't too smooth or responsive. Now, I am like 80% of the time in the big ring! It just...works real well and I kill it with the speed much better I find. Just some things for you to think about: if you have lots of hills where you live then maybe consider the triple because it just might save your legs. The weight savings by going to a double isn't that big. If your knees are damaged then consider that triple some more. Whatever you choose, have fun and ride!!

How does the compact perform with the 50 big ring compared to the 52 or 53 you get with the triple or standard double

I spin out just above 40mph with a 50/12, which is as fast as I care to go. A rider in good form should be able to spin a little faster than that, but if you want to pedal to faster speeds you'll miss the 53. Personally, I would love to have a triple on some of the steeper climbs, but I haven't tried trading my 12-23 out for a 12-25 or 13-26 yet, nor a 34 front ring. I am trying to avoid it, though, because that limits the gear selections in the middle. If you like fine tuning your cadence, you'll miss the triple. If a range of about 10 rpm works for you, no worries.
