Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes. You may have been over-heated. How hot was it?

I was coming up a pretty decent hill on my Sunday ride. Three inclines, two plateaus. Long. Last time I did this route, it killed me. Dee ee dee, ded. That was months ago. Since then I've gotten much better at hills, and I've been riding fixed a good deal. So I was going up this hill in my middle chainring and doing it. It's hurting, but I'm doing it. I'm pushing hard, but I'm doing it. On the second plateau I take a deep breath, exhale, and close my eyes for just a second.

That's when it hits me. I get dizzy and feel like I'm going to fall. Did I mention it was a humid day, I was pushing a taller gear than by all rights I should have been, and I was sweating a virtual rainstorm? I open my eyes, coast and steady the bike, and drop down into my little chainring (I run a triple, and after this ride very grateful for it) where I proceed to climb the last (and worst) of the three inclines.

My speed took a total digger, but I didn't pass out nor did I puke. For that I am pleased.

That's the closest I've ever been to an upheaval.

Damn it. I read that story while anticipating a good puke at the end.

Surely, you jest. I thought it was mandatory the temperature always remain above 100F at all times. Now if you were riding on rollers or a trainer then I understand.

It happened to me about a month or so ago. It was before I got my road bike and was still using my MTB as a roadie. I didn't have clipless pedals, I was wearing black shorts and a black wicking shirt, and going up a fairly steep, long hill. I got about halfway up and started getting dizzy and a felt a little like I was going to yak. I stopped under a tree and just sat. I threw up the strawberries I had forgotten that I ate - first thought was "Did I just throw up blood?" I just sat for a few minutes, sipped water then hopped back on and finished the hill. It was probably around the mid 90's.

In the part of AZ that I live, temps are good in the morning, so I dont think that has to do with it.

Sorry, I let you down. Next time I'll be sure to lose my lunch. I'll projectile vomit your screen name on the ground and take a photo for you.

Can I request that you refrain from doing that on our ride Sunday? Pretty please???? Okay...if you have to puke, could you be sure to aim it away from me?

No problem. I'm sure Sunday will be puke free. Besides, I have to practice for a few weeks at least before I can projectile vomit with enough accuracy and control to write someone's name on the ground. Heh.

It happens...

I was off the bike for a month before Breathless Agony. Didn't puke during my century attempt (but also didn't complete the ride), but afterward, I vowed to get back in shape. On my next ride, about 4.5 miles in, climbing the steepest part of a hill in my morning loop, I felt as if I was going to puke. It's really hard to start again on such a steep grade, so I decided to keep riding. Predictably, I puked a few seconds later--happily, hadn't eaten breakfast yet--but there wasn't much I could do about it other than making sure to puke to the left. After reaching the top, took a short break on the side of the road and contemplated turning around and going home, but I decided that with the hardest of the climbing already behind me, I might as well finish off the ride.

If you must puke, make sure to do so to the left so that it doesn't get into your drivetrain.

I used to puke all the time. There are lots of things that can cause it. In my case, a combination of riding too hard and not being careful enough about what I ate/drank in the hours before getting on the bike were usually to blame.

I puked once when I got to the top of a big hill that I'd never been up before. I then rallied to ride another 20 miles. If people can puke and rally in drinking, you can do it when riding.
