Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano vs. Campy... chain

"I don't want to start a huge debate, but...."

What's the difference between the Shimano and Campy 10-speed chains? I wanted to just buy a nice replacement Ultegra chain, but the LBS only has Chorus/Record/Dura-Ace to choose from.

Thoughts?

i say don't waste money on chains. i would go either sram or shimano for shimano drivetrains, and either wipperman or campy for campy drivetrains.
dura ace and record chains are a waste for all but the gram counters, and they pay the price. ultegra chains are every bit as good as da's and you're more likely to replace it sooner(since its cheaper).
pesonally i use sram and wippermans because i like the quicklinks.

I actually run a shimano chain on my campy drivetrain and it works great. I do know that one of them is a fraction wider than the other (but I can't remember which one). Search the archives on velonews.com in Lennard Zinn's tech articles...I know he answered this question not to long ago. But again, from a purely "I've done that" point of view, I'd just snap up a SRAM also...that's good advice.

I run a Wipperman on my Campy drivetrain. Go to another LBS; chains are NOT something to spend more than $50 on

Ditto that. I was snapping Ultegra chains every two years. the SRAM chain has lasted 3 so far and is still going strong.

Actually, the Dura-Ace chain was 'only' $40. I'm transportation-limited right now, so I think I'm just going to get out there and buy it. At no store was a SRAM chain, at least that I could see/find.

Thanks for the help!
