Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It depends on what you are doing. If you freeze the whole bottle it won't melt fast enough if you want to start drinking as soon as you start riding. Even if you wait a while it's hard to drink steadily, you run out of liquid. A solid block up the side is a compromise between not melting fast enough (The whole bottle frozen), and ice cubes that melt very quickly.

here's the solution to the freezing cap thing:

the freezer door guardrails have a space that the rubber popup valve nicely grips onto... so it keeps them at an incline to prevent the cap freezing shut, and they don't roll around when you open and close the door...

BRILLIANT!

Good idea. How long does it take to thaw out the cat afterwards?

OK, so what have we learned thusfar?

Filling the bottle up 1/2 way is ok, but it takes a little effort to remove the top after it's frozen.

Freezing it at an incline seems to solve that problem.

Someone mentioned that squeezing the frozen bottle might be an issue. I don't recall seeing a direct reply to this assertion. Anybody that's done this have anything to say on this?

What I have learned is that every thread should be a sticky, especially one that talks about how to keep water coldest in one particular brand of water bottle...

Back in my earlier incarnation of cycling, I would start a ride with one water bottle that was solid ice. In order to keep from breaking the bottle, I would fill it a little at a time and freeze, and then add more... I would cycle them through the process.

Then one morning, a house guest pulled out a bottle that was ready to go, and proclaimed proudly that evening that she had taken it out of the freezer and put it in the fridge because it was frozen solid.

To get the plastic taste out (I learned this trick on one of these threads and it worked well!):

Fill bottle with baking soda and warm water. Leave in the sun for a week or two. Done.

If you freeze it sideways on a slight incline, it's a little more difficult to squeeze, but not too bad. It just requires a little more effort, it's not as if you can't sqeeze it enough to get water out.

There's more than one brand of water bottle now?

Awsome. OK, now that others have stuck their necks out and tried this with success, I guess now the more timid (e.g., me) will try it now.

Um, a technical support line for a water bottle.... If you can't figure out a water bottle, you really have no business breathing either.

You should train that cat to slowly rotate the bottles as they are freezing. I don't know what good that would do but if the cat's going to be in the freezer it should have a purpose for being there. Just make sure you leave food and water in there....and a laser to thaw the water for drinking!

I agree.

On "two-bottle" rides in really hot weather I always freeze one full bottle of half gatorade-half water mix to use as the 2nd bottle. Bottle number one gets half gatorade - half water (that are both at refridgerator temp) and leave enough room for about 4 ice cubes. That will stay cool enough for the first 45 minutes to an hour and then it's gone anyway, and by then bottle two is thawed enough to drink from.

Wait... maybe I meant laser hair removal.... that's three words.

Good luck getting that kitty out of the freezer.

Back OT, I freeze regular bottles, filled about 1/2 way and tilted slightly in the freezer.

By the time they melt, I should have drained them if I'm drinking enough.
