Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Suggestions for my next "goal achievement award"?

Got my new road bike on June 1 (after 20 years off the bike ... forgot how much I enjoyed it!). At that point, I was 264 pounds, and I set several goals:

1) Ride "consistently"
2) Get under 250 pounds

Well, last week, I was steady at 248, and have ridden an average of 4.2 days per week for the last two months, getting into the 60 miles per week average. Based on that, I decreed my first goals accomplished, and "rewarded" myself with an actual cycling jersey (I'd been riding in cheapo t-shirts).

Now, I've set the next goals:

A) Accomplish a 100-mile week
B) Accomplish a 300-mile month
C) Get under 240 pounds

Suggestions on the "reward" carrot I should hold out there for myself? No "buy a nice $5000 all-Campy custom bike", please ....

Yeah, bibs/shorts if you don't already have a good pair. Or maybe a good pair of cycling shoes (and pedals if not already clipless)?

When I rode my first century I bought myself a nice pair of Nike gloves. They were only $20-25 but I every time I look at them I think about watching my cyclecomputer roll over to 100 miles on my ride.

+ 1. Nothing improves the comfort of your ride like a good pair of shoes.

New wheels for your ride are a nice reward as well. Really the most bang for your buck in terms of improving any bike.

Congrats on hitting your goals.

What jerseys do you wear at 250? I'm 225 and just can't get comfy in a jersey! Too restricting fer me! I have a couple of Performance cheapos only to wear on centuries for the pockets. But even they aretoo snug around the shoulders and neck area....oh yeah, and the biceps too!

For looser fitting jersey's look at the mtn bike stuff... I used to wear fox jerserys which fit great and had all that wicking goodness... although now I'm proudly able to squeeze into road jerseys and feel comfortable.

This is the one I wore for a long time:

I have a Performance jersey (can't remember which one ... bought it for about $30 online) that fits great. Maybe just a bit snug around the middle, but in a month, it'll fit great. It's an XL.

FWIW, I have a VERY big bone structure - big shoulders, big wrist bones, etc. I'm heavy for my height, but not so rotund.

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.
